The folks over at Froggi.es recently updated Super Mario 64: Browser Edition to support iOS and Android devices. The browser game is compatible with Bluetooth and wired controllers like the Razer Kishi and runs remarkably well.

Froggi.es, a website that hosts Super Mario 64: Browser Edition recently updated their game to fully support Android and iOS devices, visiting through Safari and Chrome. If you have an iOS or Android device, you can head over to this link and hop right into the game, no additional downloads required.

This Super Mario 64 port and a host of others, including a PC version with ray-tracing, are possible only because of a massive data security incident at Nintendo in 2020 that saw source code for this game and others, including The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask leak.

We tried out Super Mario 64: Browser Edition on an iPhone 11 Pro Max with a Razer Kishi connected and the results were surprisingly good. The third-party controller was recognized once in-game, though certain buttons didn’t work in the opening menu, which made it finicky to actually start playing. Performance is rock-solid. However, resolution and audio are two key issues.

The game appears to run at a 16:9 aspect ratio. This means that, on the iPhone’s ultra-wide display, parts of the image are cropped out at the top and bottom. We were also unable to get audio working. Furthermore, we tried out the game on a second-gen iPad Pro, but could not get it to work at all.

Despite all this, being able to play a classic N64 title on mobile, without emulators or other additional steps is remarkable.
