However for me I feel that the phone is cutting a bit too many corner in terms of its camera. I could have lived with the slightly worse speakers and somewhat lower battery performance in order to enjoy the fantastic 90Hz screen, however the camera disadvantages are just a tad too much. OnePlus can very much remedy these aspects over the coming weeks and months, and I’m very sure there will be software updates in this regard, but it's unknown just exactly how much OnePlus will improve these aspects, and one shouldn’t base one’s purchasing decisions today on tomorrow’s possible improvements.

As I mentioned in the introduction to this review, I've never felt like OnePlus smartphones were the best before. Sure, they had flagship parts for a price that's much lower than competitors, but if the price of the OnePlus 6T was the same as a Galaxy S9 or a Huawei P20 Pro, I certainly wouldn't pick the OnePlus 6T. However, there are other areas where the OnePlus 7 Pro isn't quite on the same level as similarly priced rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S10e and iPhone XR – there's no wireless charging, no expandable storage, no adjustable bokeh blur in Portrait Mode, no IP Rating for water resistance... the list goes on. There's a lot to love here, but the new higher price tag means you'll want to look closely at the competition before you take the plunge.

Model:

OnePlus initially got its fame by being the flagship killer in the smartphone industry. It promised to offer flagship hardware for a lower than mid-range price tag. Additionally, OnePlus was well known for extremely smooth Android performance. It did so by keeping a relatively clean or near stock Android. This resulted in a very fast phone that would hardly get slower with time. Many users reported an uncompromised performance on their OnePlus devices even after several years. This year, OnePlus took a rather interesting step by first introducing a Pro version of its OnePlus 7 which would be released slightly later. This move was rather interesting, as OnePlus has generally introduced only two phones in a year, one being the version with the yearly incremental number and another ‘T’ model in the second half of the year. This practice started in 2015 when it first introduced a second, cheaper OnePlus X three months after releasing the OnePlus 2. In the next few years, it released the OnePlus 3, 4, 5 and 6, followed by the upgraded ‘T’ version in the second half of the year. Last year’s model added one more, the OnePlus 6T McLaren, which was the result of a collaboration with the racing company McLaren.

The OnePlus 7 Pro features a dual Gorilla Glass 5 sandwich panel with a metal chassis, giving it the flagship-level premium build quality. On the left side of the phone is a volume rocker, while on the right side of the phone are a physical volume key and the power button. The underside has a USB-C 3.0 port, a speaker grill, a microphone and a dual sim tray. On the front is a massive 6.67-inch 90Hz Fluid AMOLED display with a resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels, which has been rated one of the best displays on the market in terms of color accuracy, contrast and brightness. The display also supports HDR 10+ contents. Its 19:5:9 ratio fills up the entire front portion (88.1% screen-to-body ratio), leaving only a little bit of space for the front facing top speaker. The 90Hz speed makes everything look extra smooth, which also gives the extra fluidity in gaming. It can be switched to 60 Hz to save battery life. In terms of hardware, the OnePlus 7 Pro comes with the Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor paired with the Adreno 640 GPU. In total, there are three configurations of RAM and ROM in which it can be purchased. The first has 128 GB of memory with 6 GB of RAM. The second has 256 GB of memory with 8 GB of RAM, and the highest one has 256 GB of memory with a massive 12 GB of RAM. Unfortunately, this phone does not support memory expansion via a card slot.

As for the camera, the OnePlus 7 Pro now features an industry-leading triple camera setup. The camera setup has been given one of the best scores on the popular DXOMark rating. The main camera is a 48MP f/1.6 camera with OIS. The second unit is a 16MP f/1.6 ultrawide camera, and the third is an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto camera with OIS. Combined, these cameras take some pretty stunning shots both in day time and in night mode. In some ways, they are even better than the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus and the Huawei P30 Pro. The selfie camera is probably the most interesting part of this phone. To obtain that full-screen design, OnePlus has included a motorized pop-up 16MP f/2.0 camera. The motor in it is rated for at least 30,000 pop-ups. This includes the motorized functions working for face detection. The phone comes with the latest Bluetooth 5.0, which is good, as it does not have a 3.5mm earphone jack. The fingerprint scanner is embedded under the display, and tests have proven it to be the fastest of its kind on the market. The 4,000mAh battery supports OnePlus’s latest 30W warp charge, which can give it half the power in about thirty minutes. OnePlus then remains a true flagship killer, but this time, it comes at a very flagship-like pricing - its price is not too far from the biggest names. To achieve this, it omitted a couple of features, namely wireless charging and water-resistance rating.

SD 855: High-end SoC for smartphones that was introduced in late 2018 and manufactured in 7 nm at TSMC. Integrates one “Prime Core” based on a modified ARM Cortex-A76 architecture clocked at up to 2.84 GHz. Three more performance cores are also based on the A76 but clock up to 2.42 GHz. Furthermore, four energy saving cores are integrated that are based on the ARM Cortex-A55 architecture and clock at up to 1.8 GHz. It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
