Reviews for the Xiaomi Mi 9
Xiaomi has made the impossible possible with the Mi 9, at least according to the standards set by other manufacturers anyway. The Mi 9 only costs 450 Euros (~$505), which is midrange pricing, but it is one of the best flagship smartphones that you could currently buy. Its 48 MP triple camera, UFS 2.1 flash storage, premium design and AMOLED display are just a few of the reasons that the device excels, as is its brand-new Snapdragon 855 SoC. We put the Mi 9 to the test in our detailed review and see how it stacks up against other flagship smartphones.

One of the more significant annual updates from Xiaomi, the new Mi 9 is an incredible phone at an unmissable price. It's faster than Galaxy S10 and closer than ever in specification, so it's increasingly difficult to understand the huge difference in price. Mi 9 introduces several design changes, including the in-display fingerprint sensor as standard, super-fast wireless (and wired) charging, a larger screen that takes up a greater proportion of the body, and a new triple-lens camera at the rear, which includes a whacking great 48Mp lens. Performance is better, photography is better, design is better. Everything is better with the award-winning Mi 9.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is one of the most compelling phones we've seen from Xiaomi. Although the design isn't a revolution from the Mi 8, it does feel like it's a lot more advanced. The camera offers more fun with that wide-angle lens, the in-display fingerprint scanner keeps up with the latest trends, and the display notch and handling is decent.

If you're looking to get the latest features without spending a lot of money, the Mi 9 is the phone to get. It is powered by the beastly new Snapdragon 855, and there's a 48MP camera at the back that takes fantastic photos. Couple that with 20W wireless charging, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and a sleek design with interesting color options, and you get one of the best affordable flagships of 2019.

Overall, I think the Xiaomi Mi9 is a fantastic device with the only real and possible deal-breaking compromise being its low-light photography. I hope for the next generation Xiaomi doesn’t make this compromise again, even if the phone costs 10$/€ more.

I am very impressed with the Mi 9, and I don’t really want to give it back. Is it the most exciting device of the year? Of course not. The Samsung Galaxy S10 line will grab more headlines for packing in so many different features and offering crazy things like 12GB of RAM. Earlier triple camera phones like the Huawei P20 Pro likewise garnered more attention for being first.

A flagship can easily cost more than RM 3000 these days, but the Mi 9 remains very much affordable for the masses. As usual, Xiaomi's integration of the tech specs (Snapdragon 855) and price point for RM1999 are definitely the two important factors to consider and this makes the Mi 9 value for money. While there's the shameless advertisements found in Xiaomi-made apps and the lack of the 3.5mm headphone jack, the Mi 9 is still a great phone.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is a powerful device with some great features – and at such a relatively low price, it’s unexpectedly fantastic. With a chipset and camera setup to rival high-end flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S10, yet a price tag roughly half as large, it’s definitely a device worth considering if you want a strong handset from a lesser-known brand. That’s not to say it's a perfect phone, and the corners Xiaomi has cut to keep the Mi 9’s price low become more evident the more you use it. Gaming and photography can cause the device to warm up a little too much – never to a level that’ll slow the phone, but more than most other handsets would under similar circumstances. The battery capacity is a little disappointing too – a device that’s so good for battery-intensive activities should really be able to last longer when used for those activities.

Overall, the Xiaomi Mi 9 is a remarkable flagship device. Physically, it may not have any novelties in its design, but the Mi 9 still gives off that elegant and premium feel. With regards to its internals, its Snapdragon 855 processor renders the Mi 9 more than capable of giving a top-caliber performance at half the price of its more expensive flagship peers from other brands. It may have some caveats — poor audio speaker quality, no 3.5mm headphone jack, no IP rating — but the cameras, display, and storage are also enticing enough to consider this device.

Mi 9 was a Tech Advisor Best in Show at MWC award-winner, and that's something we have not lived to regret upon closer inspection of Xiaomi's latest flagship. Devilishly fast, insanely beautiful and offering the best value for money you'll find in any smartphone, anywhere. So should you buy it? You'd be mad not to.

I would say this is the best value in a flagship smartphone in the world, but it’s increasingly hard to say things like that as the global tech market continues to fragment. Instead, all I can say is that Xiaomi has turned in an incredibly solid product at an extremely reasonable price, and now that the company has at least some Western presence, OnePlus and Honor should be on notice.

Xiaomi is pricing the Mi 9 at just Php 22,990 for the 6GB/64GB variant, and just Php 24,990 for the 6GB/128GB variant. That’s incredible value for a flagship, considering its rivals retail for twice the price – sometimes even higher.

Xiaomi’s latest flagship offers tremendous value for €449. It has the latest Snapdragon processor, a modern design with a teardrop-shaped notch, and a better-than-expected camera system. The company’s Android skin, MIUI, is much-improved but still a divisive software experience. Overall it’s a great alternative to the OnePlus 6T (and eventually OnePlus 7) in Europe.

Now it’s time to mention the biggest factor in favor of the Mi 9: the price. The Mi 9 isn’t coming to the States officially, but in Europe, it sells for around 449 euro (roughly $509) while the Galaxy S10 costs 899 euro (roughly $1,020) over there and the OnePlus 6T, arguably the Mi 9’s closest competitor, is 549 euro (around $624). So while the Mi 9 has some drawbacks, the value you’re getting is immense. Still, if you’re on the lookout for a flagship phone and you value a simpler, cleaner software experience, you might want to wait for the OnePlus 7.

It's hard to argue with what the Xiaomi Mi 9 offers for the price, on paper – and after a couple of hours in its company, it looks odds-on to be one of the smartphone bargains of 2019. Competition in the 'affordable flagship' space is going to be fierce, but it combines the very latest Snapdragon chip with some very powerful camera features. Its screen size and MIUI Android skin might not be for everyone, but otherwise the Mi 9 is going to be a formidable foe for the likes of OnePlus and Honor.

Xiaomi has impressed us in the past with devices such as the Mi MIX 3 and Mi 8, but the Mi 9 takes things to a whole new level, placing the Chinese company’s latest flagship model firmly into the big league of smartphone cameras—right up there with the heavy-hitters from Apple, Samsung, and Huawei. With convincing results across the board and no major flaws, the Mi 9 is the third-best device so far for still imaging, edged out only by Huawei juggernauts Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro. In video mode it does even better, finding itself at the very top of our ranking, making it the top choice for mobile video shooters. This is partly due to the Mi 9 being the first test device recording 4K video by default and therefore scoring very high for texture and detail, but it also puts in a very good performance in all other test categories.

Xiaomi Mi 9 is a thoughtfully designed and nicely executed flagship, but we can't shake the feeling most of the upgrades are incremental at best. The Mi 9 is settings no trends the way the Mi Mix 3 was. Instead it's all about Xiaomi catching up to market moods and trying to beat competitors at their own games. And that's fine, the Mi 9 indeed has one of the most versatile snappers around with great image and video quality and it easily undercuts most direct rivals on pricing too.

What the Xiaomi Mi 9 lacks in superfluous “gimmicks” it makes up for in functional features we can all appreciate. Adding a third camera and introducing faster charging tech is a great addition to the Mi family. While it may not be the most attention-seeking choice among some aggressive competition, the Mi 9’s unassuming list of attributes is sure to still win over plenty of fans.

Model: The Xiaomi Mi series has been the flagship in their line up from the very beginning. While other models such as the Pocophone and the Mi Max series are there to give a serious bang for buck the Mi series is there to give the all best for a considerably lower price. These days its main competitions are the One Plus, Honor View and Huawei P series. Just like the Mi 8, this year’s Mi 9 comes with a glass sandwich design. The front glass is a Gorilla Glass 6 and the back is made of Gorilla Glass 5 while the sides are made of polished metal frames. The Mi 9 comes in the usual Piano Black, Ocean Blue and Lavender Violet, which is by far the most interesting color for a phone these days. The phone has a dimension of 157.5 x 74.7 x 7.6 mm and weighs in at 173 grams. The only drawback of the design is the protruding camera design. It bulges a lot, which makes it hard to use the phone on a flat surface. The Mi 9 has a 6.39-inch, Full HD+ AMOLED display with a screen-to-body ratio of 85.2%. This isn’t the best out there but with it still looks pretty impressive. This time around, the notch has been reduced to the more forgiving teardrop shape. This however does not allow for more sophisticated face detection hardware usually used for face unlock. Instead there is an under-screen fingerprint scanner this time. With the Mi 8, this feature was only available in the most expensive configuration.
The Mi 9 comes with some serious hardware configuration to hold on to its flagship status. For a start, it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with Adreno 640 GPU for some serious smartphone gaming. It comes in either a 64 GB internal memory with 6 GB of RAM or a 128 GB internal memory with 8 GB of RAM configuration. Both don’t come with expandable storage options. For the camera, the Mi 9 now comes with a triple camera setup on the back. The first camera is a 48 MP, 27 mm wide angle lens with a focal length of 1.8. The second is a 16 MP, 13 mm ultrawide lens with a focal length of 2.2. The last one is a 12 MP, 54 mm telephoto lens with a focal length of 2.2 for portraits. To make it more impressive, the camera has 2x optical zoom. On the front, there is a 20 MP f/2.0 camera with HDR. The back-camera shoots videos in 4k and the front one shoots video at 1080p resolution. The Mi 9 doesn’t come with a headphone jack. Powering it all is a 3300 mAh battery, which supports the Quick Charge 4+ standards for fast charging via a USB Type-C port located at the bottom. It also supports fast wireless charging. For its price, the Mi 9 is a serious bang for buck. It is a serious flagship competing at the Samsung’s Galaxy and Huawei’s P series level. It delivers serious performance without any drawbacks in terms of specs or design like the Pocophone. However, with Huawei set to release the P30 anytime soon, potential buyers may want to wait for it before they decide.

6.39":
It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
