Case, Equipment and Operation
If a manufacturer who originally started out to establish a cheap flagship killer suddenly dares to enter the market with a device for 859 euros, then it better offer a lot. The OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition already has an exclusive case design with accents in McLaren orange and a design that mimics the grain of precious wood around the camera. It's really nice to see how light reflexes break on the housing, and whether you find the design noble or kitschy is up to you.
In terms of weight and size, the smartphone corresponds to the OnePlus 7T Pro. The case is very stable, but creaks quietly when twisted.
The OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition is well equipped, the 12 GB RAM are very generously dimensioned. Also 256 GB mass memory should last for a long time for most users, you can't expand the memory via microSD. LTE with 4x4 MIMO and 1.200 MBit/s in the download is on board. Quite a lot of frequencies are supported, which makes life easier for travellers. The WLAN speed is okay, but in view of other high-end smartphones it can't convince completely.
A fast in-screen fingerprint scanner and optional face recognition make it easy to unlock the smartphone. On the right, there is a high-quality slider again, with which you can quickly and easily mute the smartphone. The touch screen offers a good surface and can be operated quickly and very smoothly.

Cameras
A wide-angle lens, a standard lens and a telephoto lens are located on the back of the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition. The telephoto lens allows a 3x optical zoom compared to the standard lens and therefore has a clear advantage over the OnePlus 7T with 2x zoom. The main camera can take 48-megapixel shots, but in the standard settings four pixels are always combined to form a large, highly light-sensitive pixel, resulting in a resolution of 12 megapixels, which is easily sufficient for most shooting situations. The photos of the main camera please with many details, a good color representation and also a good variety of details and sharpness in bad light. The OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition offers camera technology of the highest quality.
Videos can be recorded in 4K with 60 fps, the quality is also very good here. The retractable front camera is an eye-catcher and also makes good selfies.
Display
A highlight of the OnePlus-7T series are the displays with 90 Hz technology, which allow very smooth operation and a very fluid user experience. It is also used in the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition, but the maximum brightness is not quite as high as in the OnePlus 7T. Thanks to AMOLED technology, however, the black level is absolute and the DeltaE deviations, i.e. the indicators for color accuracy, are very low, so that the naked eye cannot see any difference between the reference color space and the display.
As with all AMOLED displays, there are PWM flickers across the entire brightness spectrum below maximum settings. There is an optional DC-dimming mode, which we have taken a close look at with the OnePlus 7 Pro and which wants to reduce the problems of PWM for many users through constant frame rates. You'll probably have to try it out for yourself to see if it works, but it should definitely provide relief for many users.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 294.1 Hz | ||
The display backlight flickers at 294.1 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) . The frequency of 294.1 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18110 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
Performance, Emissions and Battery Life
In terms of performance, the McLaren smartphone offers great value thanks to its processor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+: This shouldn't cause any problems in apps or games. And then there's the perceived speed, which is very, very fast thanks to UFS 3.0 memory and a 90 Hz display. However, you shouldn't hope for a 90 Hz refresh rate in games and other complex apps: At high load, OnePlus reduces the frame rate, probably to conserve battery power. But the colleagues of XDA Developers have found a trick how to force 90 Hz.
As already with the OnePlus 7T, the warming is also quite high with this OnePlus smartphone. Up to 46.9 °C can be unpleasant for the user, especially in summer. In our test, the stereo loudspeakers play somewhat quieter than in the OnePlus 7T, but offer a very good sound across all volume settings.
The OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition has a slightly increased battery of 4,085 mAh compared to the previous generation, which makes it last a long time: More than 15 hours in our WLAN test make two working days of continuous use within reach. Thanks to WarpCharge 30T, the smartphone is fully recharged in just over 1 hour, and the charger is quite large.

Verdict
Even though OnePlus does a lot to sell the McLaren Edition of the OnePlus 7T Pro, it is still something for lovers: The differences are too small and 100 Euro surcharge is a proud sum. But you get more RAM, which is only rarely noticeable in everyday life, an exclusive case, which is quite chic, but might not suit everyone's taste and a quite high-quality cover with materials, as they are also used in a McLaren vehicle.
If you leave out the comparisons, the OnePlus 7T Pro Mc Laren Edition is undisputedly worth its money in terms of performance, the 90 Hz screen, the high-quality camera and the long-lasting battery with great fast charging technology are also highlights. But a somewhat faster WLAN module would also look good on such an expensive smartphone. There is also no guarantee from the manufacturer for water or dust protection. You also have to do without wireless charging.
The OnePlus 7T Pro Mc Laren Edition is a very high-quality smartphone whose design you have to like.
Those who like the features, but not the design, can save as much as 250 Euros with the OnePlus 7T Pro 100 and 250 Euros with the OnePlus 7T, but also have to accept a notch on the screen with the latter.
