One of the most important stellar shows of the year won't happen

Over the past few weeks, many astronomers have been observing the comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS). Indeed, this celestial object had the potential to produce a unique spectacle in the sky by becoming very bright, as was the case with Halley’s Comet. However, this scenario will not occur, because the comet has met a tragic fate.

It must be said that a comet’s journey through our solar system is difficult and full of dangers. But the most critical phase is none other than its passage near the Sun. During this stage, the environment is extremely hostile and temperatures are very high. As a result, this can cause the disintegration of certain comets, as in the case of C/2026 A1 (MAPS).

Indeed, this happened on April 4, 2026, when this promising celestial object passed close to the Sun. An image captured by the LASCO coronagraph shows the comet heading toward our star, but at 200,000 km from its surface, it broke apart into several fragments.

This event can be seen in another image published by NASA. Indeed, in this image, we can see a cloud of dust that was caused by the fragmentation of this comet. Consequently, C/2026 A1 (MAPS) will not be visible from Earth in the coming days. However, other comets might meet a different fate and offer a unique spectacle in the sky, but further observation will be needed.
