OPPO A79 5G launches as Android 13 smartphone with a flat 90Hz display for under US$250

OPPO has just released its third-gen foldable smartphone (available as the OnePlus Open in markets such as India); therefore, it is almost appropriate that its next mobile device comes from the other end of the affordability spectrum.

The A79 5G looks a lot like the higher-end OnePlus Nord CE 3, with the kind of double-barrelled camera hump that can hold up to 3 lenses. The new OPPO smartphone has just 2, however: a 50MP "Innovative AI" primary shooter and a 2MP afterthought secondary camera.

On the other hand, the new device has moved on to a flat display design that can go from 60Hz to 90Hz; then again, its 6.72-inch LCD panel falls behind with an FHD+ resolution and a noticeable chin, and is augmented by "Panda Glass" rather than anything from Corning.

It is also driven by the profoundly mediocre MediaTek Dimensity 6020 processor - which does, at least, run ColorOS 13.1 based on Android 13. Furthermore, the A79 5G boasts Bluetooth 5.3 with the aptX HD codec to go with its USB type-C port and 3.5mm jack.

OPPO touts the A79 5G as a "light" device, and not just because it has a mass of 193g despite its appreciably large 5,000mAh typical capacity rating. The new smartphone comes in Mystery Black as well as Glowing Green, although its new rear panel treatment is more prominent in the latter.

OPPO has unleashed the A79 5G through channels such as Amazon with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage expandable to 1TB via its microSD card slot for just INR 19,999 (~US$240).
