Xiaomi 14 Pro backed for Gorilla Glass Victus 2-beating durability with new Dragon Crystal Glass
Xiaomi has set out to counter the iPhone 15 Pro series with a titanium-augmented smartphone of its own - albeit in special-edition versions of the 14 Pro only. Then again, the same new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered flagship has something else in common with its latest counterparts from Apple: custom first-party protective display glass.
Rather than go with Corning-brand protection like any other Android flagship, Xiaomi has gone and developed Dragon Crystal Glass by itself, as showcased by the company's CEO Lei Jun. The executive highlights its apparently enhanced scratch-resistance, thanks to an in-house production process resulting in a type of ceramic made of "millions of nano-scale microcrystals" in a "firmly interlocked" conformation.
The company asserts that this structure confers "10x" drop-proofing on the 14 Pro, and confers a score of 860 in a standard test of hardness (HV0.025) on the new material, beating Gorilla Glass Victus 2, Apple's Ceramic Shield and Huawei Kunlun Glass 2 with results of 670, 814 and 830 respectively.
Accordingly, with claims of exclusive structural reinforcements such as these, the Xiaomi 14 Pro may find itself hitting a durability test video near you soon.
