OnePlus' co-founder Carl Pei has since launched a new brand called Nothing. The former smartphone exec still has not specified all of the markets it intends to break into, although there are signs it will start with the personal audio space, possibly to be followed by mobile devices. Its latest teaser is a concept design for TWS earbuds, as this is the category into which its inaugural product will fall.
This render - called the Concept 1 - shows a bud with a round earpiece that extends into a short stalk with a stubby metal cap. Nothing hugely unusual about that - except that they are shown in a clear primary material that puts most of their internals on show.
That would indeed make them stand out in a market that likes its colored plastics. However, Pei has also conceded that this apparent prototype, generated by Nothing's new Head of Design Tom Howard, is not intended to see the light of day as a product. Instead, the image (which is all we have of this Concept 1 to date) has been released to illustrate the brand's general esthetic, which will apparently be based on "weightlessness, effortlessness, and timelessness".
Then again, it is also possible the "real" Nothing TWS earbuds will be transparent. The company has also noted that they will be inspired by "a grandmother's pipe": an arguably odd choice that could be interpreted to mean the inclusion of longer, thinner stems. In any case, the accessories are still projected to launch in the nest few months.
