Carl Pei announced his departure from the smartphone OEM OnePlus, after leading it along with co-founder Pete Lau to arguably meteoric success over the first 7 years of its existence, in October 2020. The ex-executive subsequently revealed that he planned to start all over again with a new company. Now, he is nearly ready to unveil this firm to the world.
Pei took to his signature Twitter handle @getpeid to post that this event will take place on January 31, 2021. He also noted that he has decided to go with a fleet of MacBook Airs powered by the new in-house processor, the Apple M1, for his new team.
Rather than leave any readers to be jealous of them, however, Pei has also decided to give 10 more of these machines away ahead of his upcoming launch party. To avail of a chance at one of these laptops, one needs to enter a Gleam.io competition, as well as to follow Pei on Twitter and re-tweet his 'announcement' post. These entries are valid until January 31, 2021.
It might be a measure of the former OnePlus staff member's confidence in his new venture that he has chosen this method of promoting it - not to mention possibly spending some of the capital he had raised for it from his investors on the 10 PCs. To date, the nature of Pei's new brand and what it is to do or sell remains a mystery, although it is rumored to be audio-related.
