Nexoc GH7 (Clevo NH77DCQ) Review: Gaming laptop with a replaceable battery

Lots of space for storage. Due to its rather classic build, the GH7 from Nexoc, which is based on a Clevo barebone, offers a lot of space for maintenance options. While the cooling system is also able to keep up well with the GTX 1660 Ti that is used here, it might become a bottleneck with the more powerful GPU options. Our review will clarify what else buyers can expect.
Nexoc GH7

We recently took a look at the Nexoc GH5 515IG, which left a good impression despite the rather moderate equipment of our test configuration. While that could still be carried around fairly easily with its 15-inches, the Nexoc GH7 with its 17-inch screen turns out significantly more massive. The built-in hardware is also slightly more powerful and suited for Full-HD gaming with Intel's Core i7-10750H and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. In addition, there are 16 GB of RAM and a 500 GB SSD.

With this equipment, we compare the Nexoc GH7 with the competing devices listed below. You can also add more laptops from our database to the comparison underneath each of the sections.

Case - Moderate design made of plastic

The case of the Nexoc GH7 is made of black plastic that will quickly and clearly show some fingerprints. While the corners, sides, and palm rests appear quite robust, the bottom of the case and the lid can be pushed in with some slight pressure. However, when opening the lid with a single hand, it only warps minimally. The maximum opening angle is about 140° and you have to use both hands, since otherwise the base unit will also be lifted up.

Even though with a weight of 2.5 kg (~5.5 lb), the Nexoc GH7 is not the lightest gaming laptop in our test field, it can still be transported easily. While it is not as deep as comparable devices, it is thicker than our selected competitors.

Equipment - Also some ports in the back

The Nexoc GH7 offers a good selection of connections. These are not only spread over the sides, but some are also positioned in the back, which is a good place for some particularly stiff LAN cables and the power connection. Overall, the selection of ports hardly leaves anything to be desired.

Communication

With the GH7, users can create wireless connections via Bluetooth and WLAN. Thanks to the fast WiFi-6 standards, very high data transfer rates are possible with the latter. In addition, there is a GigabitLAN connection.

In our test with the Netgear Nighthawk AX12 reference router, the Nexoc laptop achieves 1560 Mb/s when receiving and 1290 Mb/s when transferring data. With these results, the GH7 is able to take the lead in our test field.

The Webcam of the Nexoc GH7 still offers the very common 0.9 MP, which only allows taking mediocre recordings. For simple video chats the quality is sufficient, but our ColorChecker Passport and the test chart show colors that are too bright and some clear paleness that becomes noticeable on the edges of our example pictures.

Warranty

Nexoc offers buyers of the GH7 a warranty period of 24 months. According to the manufacturer website, this can also be expanded to 36 months at an additional cost.

Input Devices - A good keyboard and spongy mouse keys

Keyboard

The keyboard of the Nexoc GH7 offers a comfortable pressure point and good purchase to the fingers, so longer typing tasks will succeed easily. The arrow keys also have the regular size, and only the number block turns out slightly compacted, which seems unnecessary, considering the available space.

Nexoc has also built in a four-step keyboard illumination that illuminates all the keys evenly, without being too bright. You can choose among various colors in the "LED Keyboard Settings," but it only offers predefined options. You cannot activate a white light, for example.

Touchpad

As mouse replacement, the GH7 offers a classic touchpad with separate mouse keys. The pad allows for precise navigation with the mouse pointer, but the mouse keys feel a little too spongy.

* ... smaller is better

With a good contrast ratio of 1212:1 and a relatively low black value of 0.25 cd/m², the screen of the Nexoc GH7 is able to delineate colors well and displays dark image content deep and saturated. At 96% (sRGB) and 61% (AdobeRGB), the color space coverage is also good.

The CalMAN analysis reveals that colors are displayed with a blue tint in the state of delivery. However, this can be remedied by a calibration. You can download the corresponding ICC file in the Window above, to the right of the graphic on the brightness distribution of the display.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White
8.6 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 4.8 ms rise
↘ 3.8 ms fall
The screen shows fast response rates in our tests and should be suited for gaming.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 18 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is better than the average of all tested devices (21.6 ms).
Response Time 50% Grey to 80% Grey
15.2 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 7.6 ms rise
↘ 7.6 ms fall
The screen shows good response rates in our tests, but may be too slow for competitive gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 23 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is better than the average of all tested devices (33.9 ms).

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM not detected

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 18110 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

The viewing angles of the Nexoc GH7 IPS panel are very stable, and image content can be viewed from almost any angle without color distortions.

Processor

The Intel Core i7-10750H built into our test unit is a current hexa-core processor that is able to process up to 12 tasks simultaneously. The clock speed rates are between 2.6 and 5 GHz, with the cooling system playing the determining role on how long high frequencies can be maintained.

All the following benchmarks were run in the performance mode.

Our Cinebench R15 constant load test shows that the performance of the Nexoc GH7 drops by about 15% shortly after the start. This value can then be maintained at the same level until the end of the test. In the single disciplines, the single as well as the multi-core performance of the Intel Core i7-10750H is slightly above average. However, compared to similarly priced gaming laptops that are equipped with a current Ryzen 7 4800H, the pure CPU performance of the Core i7-10750H is unable to keep up.

Noise Emissions

Noise characteristic
Noise characteristic

The fans of the Nexoc GH7 can become very loud, producing a maximum noise level of 57 dB(A). However, this was only rarely the case during our regular testing. Depending on the selected performance profile, the GH7 is able to remain almost silent during Windows operation, for example. While using the profile for full performance, the fans can rev up very noticeably, due to their rather low-frequency noise, this can still be tolerated relatively easily.

During our The Witcher 3 test, the temperatures inside the Nexoc GH7 rose up to 95 °C (203 °F). During this time, the CPU clock speeds only dropped slightly to 4.2 - 4.5 GHz, which means that the cooling system is able to maintain the performance very well. Users therefore do not have to expect any limitations due to the temperatures being too high during gaming operation.

Speakers

Speaker characteristics
Speaker characteristics

The speakers of the Nexoc GH7 produce a medium volume and a fairly wide sound spectrum. While lower tones are underrepresented, the gaming laptop is still suited for the occasional consumption of media content. However, in the long run, external speakers or headphones are recommended, also in order to escape the fan noise during gaming to some extent.

Battery Life

Nexoc GH7 - replaceable battery
Nexoc GH7 - replaceable battery

In our realistic WLAN test, the Nexoc gaming laptop achieves a battery life of slightly more than 4 hours. With this, it is able to take advantage of the 48.96-Wh battery relatively well, but still has to be content with the last place in our test field. However, users also have the option to replace the battery easily and without any complications.

Testing the Nexoc GH7. Test unit provided by Nexoc.
Testing the Nexoc GH7. Test unit provided by Nexoc.

In our test, the Nexoc GH7 shows many strengths that can be traced back to the fairly moderate gaming hardware and the large case. This means that the fans have sufficient space to ensure decent heat transport, so that neither the graphics card nor the processor have to suffer from performance drops due to temperatures being too high. This is also reflected in our constant load tests, where the Nexoc GH7 offers a decent constant performance.

The Nexoc GH7 is a classic and solid gaming laptop that mainly stands out with its good maintenance options.

Due to the classic build, users can easily get access to the insides, allowing them to perform maintenance tasks themselves without too many complications. However, many options, such as more storage or working memory, can also be preconfigured at the time of the purchase. The Nexoc GH7 leaves us with a solid impression, and aside from the replaceable battery and very good maintenance options, there are neither many particular strengths nor weaknesses. It is a gaming laptop with moderate performance that does its job.
