New tri-folding smartphone render hints at design of Xiaomi's Huawei Mate XT rival
According to widely-regarded leaker Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi has patented an answer to Huawei's world-first tri-fold smartphone. The tipster has shared a render apparently based on the IP, which might showcase the device's potential similarities and differences to the Mate XT.
It is clear from the images that both smartphones would fold the same way, with a second, double-edged hinge to convert the first third of the device into a front screen when closed. However, Xiaomi's take on the form-factor is depicted as having a camera hump most like that of an early Mix Fold at the time of writing.
On closer inspection, its rear panel has a leather-like texture - like that of the OnePlus Open in Voyager Black (now $1,299.99 on Amazon). The Mate XT is also finished in vegan leather, although its camera hump is much larger and most like that of its conventional 60 RS counterpart.
Despite its work on tri-folds thus far, Xiaomi is also projected to prioritize its Mix Fold (and Flip) lines for now, rather than gamble on something that might have to cost the equivalent of at least $2,800 in the near future.
