New leaks suggest Redmi will break into wearables soon
Redmi may have a new wearable in the works. It has not released such a device since its institution as a Xiaomi brand; however, as its parent company also sells in this category, it may make sense for this company to do the same. Given the applicable leaks, it is likely that this new product is to be a fitness tracker.
This theory is based on a recent post by the increasingly well-known Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station. This user claims to have uncovered an image of this "Redmi Fitness Tracker", which has allegedly been derived from Xiaomi's Mi Fit app.
This leak depicts a rather squared-off version of the kind of fitness band that slots into a compatible silicon band. It has a screen that may suffer in terms of real estate thanks to profound bezels on all sides, yet, interestingly, has a white line along the bottom edge that could be a capacitive button. All in all, it looks (as Digital Chat Station may intimate in the translated post) like a low-rent Mi Band 5.
Nevertheless, the leaker also asserts that it will have many modern fitness-tracker functions, NFC for payments, music controls and heart-rate tracking included. Meanwhile, elsewhere on social media, Sudanshu Ambhore claims to have dug up a new BIS approval for a "Redmi smartwatch", which may turn out to be this same device.
Therefore, should these leaks prove valid, it is possible that the brand is indeed preparing an entrance into the fitness-tech market, albeit at a lower tier compared to that targeted by its own parent at present. It will be interesting to see if this device, should it be launched soon, will be made by Huami, which acts as the ODM for most of the Mi Band line to date.
