New Xiaomi Smart Plug 2 arrives with Google Home support
The Xiaomi Smart Plug 2 has landed in the EU. You can use the gadget to make regular gadgets around your home smart, allowing you to control them remotely. The smart plug supports Google Home, allowing you to control the connected item with Google Assistant voice commands.
Alternatively, you can control the smart plug via the Xiaomi Home app, where you can also remotely check if a device is switched on and view statistics on your energy consumption over time. Another use of the app is to set up a schedule for an appliance, which could help you ensure gadgets are switched off when you’re out at work or trigger lights while you are on holiday. A double press on the built-in power button will trigger a countdown timer; you can set your preferred timer length in the app. It is worth noting that countdown timers and schedules will still operate if the device disconnects from the internet. The switch also has a status memory, ensuring it resumes its on or off state after a power outage.
The plug contains sensors to detect issues like overcurrent or overheating, with app notifications triggered in these cases. The gadget is relatively compact, measuring 62 x 41 x 33 mm (~2.4 x 1.6 x 1.3-in); for comparison, the Kasa Smart Plug, also compatible with Google Home, measures 60 x 52 x 38 mm (~2.4 x 2.0 x 1.5-in). You can now buy the Xiaomi Smart Plug 2 in EU countries like Spain and Italy for €14.99. It is unclear whether or when the product will roll out to other areas.
