Eve wants to remodel your smart home with a Matter-enabled wall outlet that runs on Thread
Eve Systems has announced three upcoming Matter-enabled devices for next year: a smart light switch, smart window shades, and the world's first Thread-based smart outlet.
The Eve Energy outlet is a dual-receptacle in-wall installation that replaces any existing wall socket, eliminating the need for an unsightly smart plug. It can also work with any platform that supports Matter – that includes Alexa, HomeKit, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings – all without a cloud connection, since it runs on Matter over Thread.
Being a Thread-based device might pose an issue for Eve Energy gadgets since you will need to purchase a Matter controller that also serves as a Thread border router. To avoid any confusion, the company website provides a list of compatible controllers.
While Eve Energy, a smart plug, is defined by flexibility, Eve Energy Outlet offers a sleek and permanent solution."
Eve is marketing the smart wall socket as a more permanent form of its excellent Eve Energy smart plug, rather than a complete replacement. This makes sense, since some users will definitely want to avoid the hassle of ripping out an existing wall socket to install a new one.
Starting out at $49.95 on February 6th, 2024, the Eve Energy smart outlet is only slightly more expensive than a smart plug while offering two sockets instead of one. But unless Matter adds support for energy tracking before its launch date, the most important features of this device will still be limited to HomeKit and SmartThings.
Eve's other products are also slated for next year: the Matter-enabled Eve light switch is expected by the second quarter of 2024. On the other hand, Eve's window blinds are slated for February 1st, but will be available exclusively from the Eve Store, and only in the US and Germany.
