The Steam Deck supports AMD FSR 3.1, but many games lack native support. However, with the Decky Framegen plugin, the gaming handheld can run many of such titles with AMD's frame generation tech in place.

While the Steam Deck is still capable of running a good number of AAA games, its hardware has started showing its age, especially when compared to the new Zen 5 gaming handhelds. However, with frame-generation tech, it's still possible to have quite an enjoyable experience on a gaming handheld, if you don't mind the input lag it introduces, of course.

But then again, the Steam Deck doesn't support Nvidia DLSS, and a good number of top hits don't have native support for AMD FSR 3.1. Lossless Scaling can stand as a viable solution in such instances, but it's a paid tool. As showcased by Deck Wizard, a new plugin called Decky Framegen can be considered a free alternative.

At the core, the plugin replaces the Nvidia DLSS DLL with FSR 3.1 DLL. This allows the gaming handheld to use frame generation in games that don't have support for AMD FSR 3.1. As the video by Deck Wizard shows, with this plugin, the gaming handheld can run titles like The Witcher 3, Black Myth: Wukong, and Hogwarts Legacy with modded FSR 3.1 frame-gen in place.

Of course, the mod isn't flawless, as there can be visual issues with these FSR 3.1-unsupported games. For example, as shown in Deck Wizard's video, in Final Fantasy XVI, there is some ghosting. However, even with the issues, the mod seems to help smooth out the gameplay with frame generation.

Deck Wizard's video also walks through the process of installing this mod, making it a proper guide for those who want to try out Decky Framegen. Deck Wizard notes that the input lag isn't bad, and the gameplay appears to be quite responsive, which is an important factor to consider when using any frame generation tech.
