The modding community has once again done what OEMs like Nvidia, Microsoft, and AMD should have done. This time, they have developed a mod that brings FSR 4 or AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution to any game that already has support for DLSS 2 or XeSS. This is still limited to the latest Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT GPUs but now more games can effectively run better on systems with these GPUs, instead of the handful that currently support the upscaling feature.
Uploaded on GitHub by user cdozdil, the mod called OptiScaler allows games that already have support for Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) 2, FSR 2, or Intel’s XeSS to replace those with any of the other upscalers including FSR 4. It works the other way around as well which means if a game supports FSR or XeSS only, the mod allows users to inject support for DLSS, which may work better if they have an RTX GPU. This also allows users to make use of the frame generation tech that these upscalers bring, even if the developer of the game has not added support for it.
According to the GitHub page, how OptiScaler works is by implementing the API methods of these different upscaling technologies and acting as a middleman to redirect the game to choose whichever upscaler the user wants. With integration with other mods like OptiFG, Nukem’s dlssg-to-fsr3, and FakeMichau’s FakeNvapi, it can enable frame generation as well as Anti-Lag 2.
It should be noted that support for FSR 4 is currently in experimental stage, and it can only be implemented via Nightly builds. This means there may be some bugs, and the overall experience may not be as optimized as using the other upscalers. That being said, a user shared some results of FSR 4 through OptiScaler in action in Cyberpunk 2077 and it enabled over 60 FPS at 1440p with full Path Tracing, one of the heaviest settings in the game. The game does not officially support FSR 3.1 so it is expected that there will not be any official support for FSR 4 either.
