Nintendo released the Switch on March 3, 2017, but just a few months to its arrival, Nintendo discontinued the Wii U, its predecessor. That won't be the case with the Switch despite a successor coming, as Nintendo has disclosed that it will continue to sell the Switch following the release of the Switch 2.
The information was revealed by Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawa, during an earnings call. According to the top executive, Nintendo will continue selling the Switch as long as there's demand. The news comes following a decline in the sales of the Switch which is now in its 8th year. The decline in sales is believed to be due to the fact that a new console is coming but President Furukawa thinks the impact isn't that significant and has hope the Switch will have a strong 8th year.
It is safe to assume that the Switch will continue to receive software support since Nintendo intends to keep selling the handheld gaming console. However, it remains to be seen if new titles will be released for both consoles simultaneously.
Nintendo already revealed that the Switch 2 will not only have exclusive titles but will also be backwards compatible with physical and digital games released for the original Switch. Although, there's a disclaimer that not all games may be supported or fully compatible with the Switch 2.
