Qualcomm announced three chipsets yesterday aimed at powering a new generation of Android-powered gaming handhelds. To recap, the company unveiled the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 and Snapdragon G1 Gen 2, which will underpin flagship, mid-range and entry-level options respectively.
So far, four devices have been presented running Qualcomm's new silicon. However, all but one utilises the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, with those being the Ayaneo Gaming Pad, Ayaneo Pocket S2 and the OneXSugar Sugar 1 from One-Netbook. Meanwhile, the Retroid Pocket Classic is the first device to use the Snapdragon G1 Gen 2, which will begin shipping next month.
For now, no Snapdragon G2 Gen 2-powered devices exist, at least not publicly. With that being said, Qualcomm has now named which partner it is working with to bring its mid-tier chipset to market. As the screenshot below shows, the partner in question is Retroid, which has also just released the Pocket Flip 2 with the older Snapdragon 865.
Retroid has not elaborated further yet. Instead, it has merely re-tweeted Qualcomm's announcement. Nonetheless, one could reasonably expect the company to use the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 in its main product line as a successor to the Pocket 5. It remains to be seen whether there will be a Pocket 6 Pro joining the Pocket 6 like the Pocket 4 and Pocket 4 Pro (curr. $199 on Amazon), though.
