Retroid has now opened pre-orders for the Pocket Flip 2 following a month of teasers about the device. The same is also true of the Pocket Classic, release details of which we have covered separately. To recap, Retroid has decided to offer the Pocket Flip 2 in two principal variants, which differ in the following areas:
Version 1
- MediaTek Dimensity 1100 chipset
- 4x ARM Cortex-A78 (2.6 GHz)/4x ARM Cortex-A55 (2.0 GHz) CPU cores
- ARM Mali-G77 MC9 GPU
- Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity
- 18 W charging
Version 2
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset
- 1x ARM Cortex-A77 (2.8 GHz), 3x ARM Cortex-A77 (2.4 GHz), 4x ARM Cortex-A55 (1.8 GHz) CPU cores
- Adreno 650 GPU
- Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity
- 27 W charging
In other words, Retroid has equipped the Pocket Flip 2 with the chipsets it uses in the Pocket 4 Pro (curr. $199 on Amazon) and the Pocket 5. According to our benchmarks, the Snapdragon 865 enjoys about a 20% performance advantage over the Dimensity 1100 in CPU and GPU benchmarks, for which Retroid charges a $20 premium.
Both Pocket Flip 2 variants ship with the same AMOLED display though, which measures 5.5-inches across while delivering a 60 Hz refresh rate, a 1080p resolution and 500 nits peak brightness. Likewise, all units will ship with Hall effect joysticks, 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128 GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage, as well as an active solution, a 5,000 mAh battery and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity. Moreover, the 300 g handheld runs Android 13 out of the box and supports external displays at up to 1080p and 60 Hz via its USB Type-C port via DisplayPort Alt Mode.
The Pocket Flip 2 is orderable from today with a Snapdragon 865 chipset for $229 in a choice of 16 Bit US, Black, GC (GameCube) and Ice Blue finishes. By contrast, the cheaper Dimensity 1100 model, which Retroid has priced at $199, will not be available until April. Please note that applying a FLIP2SAVE10 coupon at checkout will take $10 off each variant, which can be stacked with a further $10 discount (MINISAVE10) if you have previously purchased a Pocket Mini. At the time of publication, Retroid hopes to begin shipping Snapdragon 865 and Dimensity 1100 models in mid-April and at the end of April, respectively.
