Developed by Rising Star Games under the direction of Hidetaka "Swery" Suehiro, Deadly Premonition was released in 2010 to an infamously bad critical reception, with IGN famously awarding it a 2/10 score.
Despite the critical mauling, the game somehow managed to live on despite being a clunky and janky mess. It tells a uniquely unhinged but genuinely captivating story where twists come from so far out of left field that there's no way to predict them. The clunky combat is a chore, but if you can get used to it, remains surprisingly tense.
By far, the game's biggest strength is the story, told through the eyes of Agent York and his imaginary friend, Zach. The protagonist often breaks into conversation with Zach, quoting obscure movie trivia or something equally strange. It adds a unique charm to his character.
The delivery of voice lines in the game is another highlight. It is so stunted and mechanical that it becomes surreal, almost like an episode of Twin Peaks. The underlying murder mystery is also well done, as are the characters you will meet throughout your journey.
If you can stomach its flaws, it is one of the most unique gaming experiences you will likely have. And at 95% off, the game is currently just $1.24 (€1.24 or £0.99) during Steam's Spring Sale, which ends on 20 March.
