New Garmin smartwatch gains bug fixes, new features and improvements through latest software update
Garmin has brought its latest smartwatch onto its Beta Program. In summary, the company introduced the Forerunner 165 globally towards the end of February with a small AMOLED display and up to 11 days of battery life, among other features. Ultimately, the Forerunner 165 succeeds the Forerunner 55 rather than serving as a new category in Garmin's Forerunner series.
For reference, Beta Version 19.09 is not the first update for the Forerunner 165. Instead, Garmin rolled out Software Version 9.24 for the smartwatch roughly two weeks ago with 18 changes from its launch software. For some reason, the Forerunner 165 has jumped 10 software revisions between Software Version 9.24 and Beta Version 19.09 with no official explanation.
However, we suspect that Garmin is bringing the Forerunner 165 into line with the likes of the Forerunner 265 and Forerunner 955, which recently received equivalent updates. At any rate, Beta Version 19.09 is available to download now for all Forerunner 165 smartwatches. Please note that the update will only reach Forerunner 165 Music units automatically; regular Forerunner 165 units lack Wi-Fi connectivity. According to Garmin's changelog, Beta Version 19.09 brings seven changes to the Forerunner 165:
- Adds heart rate dynamic source switching to select the best heart rate data source (watch or chest HRM) to improve accuracy during running activities.
- Adds support for the Garmin Messenger app with a glance and app.
- During an activity, use GPS to navigate to the point where a phone lost connection.
- Fixes inconsistent activity profile ordering between Connect and device.
- Fixes intermittent crash in music control.
- Fixes persistent notification vibration for incoming calls.
- Various UI improvements.
