New Garmin smartwatch beta update arrives as users spot unannounced features
The Garmin Forerunner 965 smartwatch is receiving Public Beta Version 19.09. While the forum post by the Garmin team suggests that the rollout has yet to begin, several customers have reported that they have installed the update. The software is incredibly similar to that rolling out to the Forerunner 255, Forerunner 265 and Forerunner 955 wearables.
One difference is that the Forerunner 965 and 265 watches are receiving an additional bug fix, which causes the "Lock On Road" settings to be ignored. As seen with the other updates, there is a Jet Lag Adviser glance and support for Garmin Messenger in a glance and an app. The change log lists a tool that can help you to trace a lost phone using GPS, and a dynamic heart rate source, automatically switching between the watch's or chest strap's sensors to get the most accurate data. Garmin also lists a range of bug fixes; the complete change log can be found below.
Users have posted in the forum about other new features not documented in the release notes. These include haptic feedback when scrolling, dusk and dawn labels in the Sunset Glance and a map showing the position of the sun. These tools were previously seen on other models like the Fenix 7 and Epix (Gen 2). If you own a Forerunner 965 smartwatch and are enrolled in the Garmin Beta Program, you should be able to download the update from the Main menu > Settings > System > Software Update > Check For Updates. If you wish to join the Beta Program, you can find sign-up instructions here.
