Garmin Forerunner 955 and Forerunner 255 smartwatch users have spotted an unannounced feature improvement following a recent update. The change is related to how the Recovery Heart Rate metric is saved, with the data also viewable for each activity in Garmin Connect.

A new Garmin feature has been reported by users following a recent update despite not being included in the official changelog. Users of the Garmin Forerunner 955 and Forerunner 255 models have noticed that, following update 18.22, the Recovery Heart Rate calculation runs in the background.

Recovery Heart Rate, measured in BPM, indicates how quickly your heart rate returns to its usual rate following exercise, with faster recovery typically linked to a higher level of fitness. Historically, users would need to wait around two minutes after an activity for their wearable to calculate Recovery Heart Rate. In other words, users were required to wait before saving their data. Now, you can save your activity data as soon as you finish your exercise, with the calculations automatically populating after the two-minute measuring window. This also means that the metric has been added for historical workouts in Garmin Connect.

Despite this improvement, the Recovery Heart Rate is still calculated for each activity, making it hard to track changes. It is unclear why Garmin did not mention the new feature in its changelog for update 18.22 for Forerunner 955 and Forerunner 255 smartwatches. It could be that the tool is only available for users signed up to the Garmin Beta Program, though this has not been confirmed.
