The market analyst firm Omdia has produced a chart depicting the top 10 smartphone models in terms of global shipments for the first half of 2020. The Apple iPhone 11 is the champion here, with 37.7 million units shipped. Samsung takes up second place with the Galaxy A51, but it is over 26 million units behind the Apple flagship with 11.4 million shipped. The top 10 chart looks very healthy for both Apple and Xiaomi, with five and four entries, respectively, while Samsung is limited to the midrange Galaxy A51 as its only representative.
Xiaomi is definitely enjoying an upward trajectory with its Redmi sub-brand, as helpfully pointed out by Redmi’s promotion-loving general manager, Lu Weibing. Not only do the Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro continue to amass huge global sales and take up the third and fourth places (see chart below) but there is also room for the Redmi 8A and Redmi 8 in eight and ninth positions. In total, Xiaomi shipped 35.3 million units of these four popular smartphones combined, which is an excellent performance for a still relatively young brand.
However, with a massive total of 68.8 million units shipped around the globe during the first half of this year, iPhone remains the world’s favorite smartphone brand. Although there are three iPhone 11 models in the mix here, there are also appearances for the iPhone XR and the iPhone SE (2020), with the latter making a very strong showing with 8.7 million units shipped, proving that smaller phones are still very much wanted by the smartphone-buying public.
