It's been a long time since we've seen a completely redesigned GS laptop from MSI. The GS66 is a leap forward for the series in terms of visual style and build quality while the new processors are just okay upgrades at best.

The $2,699 MSI GS66 Stealth is a bubbling font of awesome. From its stellar graphics and overall performance, lightning-fast transfer speeds and surprising endurance, there’s just a whole lot of win underneath that 0.7-inch chassis. And I didn’t even mention the lovely display and cushy, customizable keyboard. My only real gripe is the audio. I’ve become so used to MSI, Dynaudio and Nahimic knocking it out of the park audio-wise, it’s surprising when it falls flat.

Not many displays feature calibration software embedded into their Gamer-centric apps. And we really appreciate it. This, combined with the capable hardware that spans to Core i9-10980HK, and RTX 2080 Super Max-Q, and that can fit 64GB of DDR4 memory and two M.2 drives are something that not only gamers will like. Content creators, 3D designers, and architects might find using this machine a piece of cake.

The GS66 Stealth that we tested is a fast gaming laptop, and it’s priced competitively to Razer’s Blade 15 — even undercutting its most similar configuration when it comes to packing in a faster refresh rate display, a larger battery, and more RAM. It’s not a bad deal on the lower-end configurations either, keeping appealing features like a Thunderbolt 3 port and a 144Hz refresh rate display in its most affordable $1,499 model. Despite a few nagging design issues, the foundation is more sound and powerful than ever. MSI’s design is the clear winner compared to the plentiful amount of all-plastic gaming laptops in each configuration’s price range. For now, Razer is still the standard to beat, but MSI is getting awfully close.

For the most part, the MSI GS66 Stealth is a good laptop that should meet the design, ergonomics, performance, and battery life expectations of its potential buyers, but it's also affected by small imperfections and quirks. Many of those concern the system's performance and thermals in demanding loads, that's why I'd primarily look into the lower-tier i7 + RTX 2060/2070 configurations of this laptop, as versatile a work/school computer with only secondary gaming abilities. We're getting in-depth in the lengthy review down below.

The GS66 is a solid follow-up to MSI’s groundbreaking GS65 Stealth Thin. It’s more powerful in every way, it has a blazing fast 300Hz screen and it even has a decent keyboard and touchpad. But it’s heavier than before, and it doesn’t stand out nearly as much from the gaming laptop competition. Still, it’s a decent option if you’re looking for a premium gaming notebook without paying Razer prices.

MSI's GS66 Stealth is a solid followup to the GS65, one of our favorite gaming laptops. The new model packs Nvidia RTX graphics and Intel's new 10th gen chips in a sleek black chassis. But while there's nothing wrong with the GS66, it faces a much more competitive field. Razer's offerings cost more, but come in sleeker, more lightweight designs, and Asus's Zephyrus G14 is nearly as fast but cheaper, lighter, and with vastly superior battery life. We like the GS66, but these days, gaming laptops are so good it's worth shopping around.

MSI GS66 Stealth 10SE-045
Gaming laptops have always been a tremendous growing market, especially in this modern era, and the MSI GS66 Stealth 10SE is one such laptop to join the market. It is a classy gaming laptop with a 240Hz display. In technical terms, it is a slightly watered-down version of the GS66 Stealth 10SFS and also comes with a lower price than the latter. On the other hand, in terms of its hardware, the GS66 brings all the latest computer games smoothly onto the matte 15.6-inch screen with a 240Hz (as mentioned earlier) Full-HD IPS panel. While the display delivers good contrast (1,007:1), the maximum brightness (259 cd/m²) is relatively low, as normally values beyond 300 cd/m² are considered good. In addition, the display flickers at a frequency of 23,580 Hz at brightness levels of 19% and below. However, even sensitive users would not be that troubled by headaches and/or eye problems due to the high frequency. The chiclet keyboard with RGB lighting is definitely suitable for everyday use, improving the overall typing experience.
As far as the processor is concerned, there is a built-in Core i7-10750H hexa-core processor (Comet Lake) that represents a good compromise between performance, power consumption and price. The CPU runs at a base speed of 2.3 GHz. The clock rate can be increased to range between 4.3 GHz (six cores) and 5 GHz (one core) via Turbo. Furthermore, Hyper-Threading (two threads per core) is supported. This MSI laptop provides sufficient computing power for all common application areas due to the powerful hexa-core processor, dual-channel memory, and a fast NVMe SSD, which makes for a quick and smooth system. Apart from that, the high-end GPU brings all modern computer games smoothly onto the screen.
In terms of its graphic cards, the GeForce RTX 2060 graphics core (Turing) supports DirectX 12 and runs at a base speed of 960 MHz. In addition, there is a possible increase of up to 1,200 MHz when boosted, and higher speeds are also feasible if the GPU does not reach a specified temperature and/or energy threshold. Apart from that, it should be noted that the GPU can make use of fast GDDR6 graphics memory. This GPU can handle resolutions beyond Full HD, although an appropriate monitor would have to be plugged in for this.
In terms of its noise emission, the GS66's fans can already turn up considerably in idle usage. At this point, the measured sound pressure levels were up to 40 dB(A). Nevertheless, the fans are indeed quiet from time to time, and then silence prevails. However, the sound pressure levels tend to increase even more under load. Overall, this device is a great gaming laptop to explore, depending on personal choice and preference.

The hardware in the GS66 brings all the latest computer games smoothly onto the matte 15.6-inch screen (240 Hz, FHD, IPS). The rest of the equipment is also right: NVMe SSD, 16 GB of RAM (dual-channel mode), and a Thunderbolt 3 port.

If you glance back at the charts above, the MSI GS66 Stealth posts solid performance overall, especially considering its weight and size. The problem is when you consider the pedigree of the components inside—Core i9 and RTX 2080 Super—as well as the price as configured, we hoped for more.

MSI’s GS66 Stealth is a suave, debonaire laptop that’s fit for James Bond. Unfortunately, it also has its own issues under the hood that make it a little complicated to own. The so-so audio and less than ideal thermals make the laptop feel like a mixed bag, rather than a slam dunk that it should’ve been at the get-go.

Having a solid hardware configuration, the GS66 Stealth 10UH tackles varying tasks with ease. A brief mention of the 8-core, 16 thread processor, 32GB DDR4, 2TB M.2 SSD and powerful graphics delivery from that RTX 3080, highlights how ferocious this laptop is. It’ll probably outperform most desktop computers. So, this laptop shows no signs of performance weakness and is able to offer reliable 3D performance in the latest triple-a gaming titles and will be proficient in content creation workflows too.

The fastest gaming laptop on the block it is not, however; our tests show that despite using a GeForce RTX 3080, our review unit trailed the Alienware m15 R4 using a higher-wattage GeForce RTX 3070. The Alienware remains our Editors' Choice pick for high-end 15.6-inch gaming notebooks, but the MSI is a fair runner-up, especially if you value its upgradability, good battery life, and much more conservative looks.

The original first-look at this laptop focused on how good it was at playing games at QHD resolution. Since then, our team has reviewed several other laptops that feature Nvidia’s latest generation of RTX 30-series graphics cards, as well as a few that have QHD screens, too. In that time, we’ve agreed that the RTX 3070, the next notch down on the totem pole of Nvidia’s latest graphics card lineup, is better at QHD gaming than we expected. The Razer Blade 15 Base and Asus’ ROG Zephyrus G15 are two key examples.

MSI's latest GS66 Stealth may look the same as last year's model, but it has a lot more going for it. It's powered by NVIDIA's new RTX 30-series GPUs, and it's one of the first gaming notebooks with a 1440p (or 2K) screen. That's a big deal. For the last few years, laptop gamers could choose from low-resolution, 1080p screens with fast refresh rates, or 4K displays that pack in a ton of pixels, but also require a ton of power to render games.

At the end of the day, the MSI GS66 Stealth 11UH isn’t as impressive as we thought it should be. Let’s start with the positive things that we saw during the testing. The device looks great, this all-metal build is really stealthy, the whole look is neat and you can use the laptop in the office without drawing too much attention on you. In short, the MSI GS66 Stealth 11UH isn’t a bad device but it’s too expensive for what it is. It has a premium build, great display options, and powerful CPU and GPU variants. There aren’t too many slim devices on the market that can be configured with high-end hardware like this MSI laptop. The device has its flaws – battery life is disappointing, the keyboard left us with mixed feelings, and the CPU cooling and CPU performance are questionable. Moreover, the device isn’t quiet under load, and the shell temperatures are at the limit for a comfortable experience. Slim and powerful gaming device – this is still a big challenge for all manufacturers.

Besides the RTX 3080 Ti, Nvidia is also launching the RTX 3070 Ti at the beginning of 2022. The MSI Stealth GS66 12UGS is the first laptop that we've been allowed to test with this promising, high-end GPU. But just how many FPS will you get on the built-in 240 Hz panel?

MSI is at a great advantage for being one of the first manufacturers to ship 12th Gen Intel devices to the market. The difference they make in computational performance is the largest we’ve seen for quite a while. And despite the weird situation with the graphics card not reaching its maximum TGP allowance, it outperforms the Triton 500 SE (PT516-52s) in some games. The I/O is pretty good, with three USB Type-Cs (one is Thunderbolt 4), which can output a DisplayPort signal. Make that a total of four display outputs, since there is an HDMI connector, as well. In addition, you get a couple of fast USB Type-As, and a 2.5G LAN port. Obviously, it supports fast wired connection speeds, but it also happens to feature Wi-Fi 6E for an equally fast wireless connection. Plus, there is an IR face recognition sensor and a fingerprint scanner. So, is this a gaming device? Or is it a content creator’s dream? Well, why not both?

The MSI Stealth GS66 12UGS marks another solid refresh from MSI. Retaining that sleek black metal design and slimline chassis seen in older Stealth models, the 12U series has undergone a substantial upgrade. but it comes at a cost. The 12UGS variant is an incredibly expensive choice for gaming laptops, though for sheer performance power, we rarely found ourselves wanting during this review. For starters, 12UGS packs a stronger performance than its predecessors, which include the MSI GS66 Stealth and MSI Stealth 15M. MSI’s moved away from the previous Intel i7 processors, equipping each 12U model with an Intel Alder Lake i9 processor, 2TB of SSD storage, 32GB RAM and, for the 12UGS specifically, an Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti. Needless to say, it’s pretty beefy where gaming laptops are concerned. There’s no denying you’ll find cheaper gaming laptops elsewhere, but the Stealth GS66 12UGS targets those seeking the highest performance from PC games. It’s pretty easy to carry around too, fitting these impressive specs into a compact package that never felt restrictive.
