The M16 can't match the Apple MacBook Pro as an all-round workstation, then. It runs pretty loud and battery life isn't nearly as good, but if you're looking for a powerful gaming machine that can also do a bit of work on the side, then the M16 does have quite a bit going for it. It's the same weight as a MacBook Pro 16in, has a great keyboard and touchpad, there's plenty of connectivity and the 16:10 165Hz display is as good for work as it is for gaming. With a much more generous allocation of RAM and storage for the money, and the possibility to add more via accessible SSD and RAM slots, the Asus Zephyrus ROG M16 is better value than it initially looks, too, although I expect that picture to change as other manufacturers begin to bring out laptops with 12th Gen Intel silicon inside.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 delivers incredible desktop-level processing power in a package with the battery life to last a day’s work. It’s just small enough to carry about with you, too. The screen is bright, with a great gamut. There is a good range of connectivity spanning from legacy USB Type A to cutting edge Thunderbolt 4. This is a great all-round notebook that is a competent jack of all trades - and master of many of them too.

The premium portable format, the versatile 16-inch 16:10 display, and the powerful specs for this segment are the main selling points of the 2022 Zephyrus M16 series, especially with the move towards the 12th gen Intel hardware and the higher-power RTX 3000Ti GPUs helped out by a MUX. Battery life still isn't amazing with Intel Alder Lake, even if improved from the 2021 generation, and potential buyers would still have to accept the quirky IO and thermal design of this series, as well as the fact that many configurations are still only available with 16 GB of dual-channel memory, without a real option for 32 GB.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 is slimmer and lighter than competitors while still providing good quality in most departments, so it’s ideal if you want a sleeker notebook. It’s hot and loud, though, and other machines have more power and more screen variety.

The ROG Zephyrus M16 2022 expands on the successes of this proven design with a 12th Gen Intel Core CPU, RTX 3070 Ti graphics and the addition of the new MUX Switch that make it a compact, portable gaming delight. The provision of a colour calibrated display in tandem with its beefy hardware make it a viable choice for serious content creators as well as serious gamers on the go though the daunting price tag and middling battery life are somewhat of a downer.

Despite its heating issues and its RTX 3070 Ti performance being slightly behind other commendable gaming laptops, the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 (2022) is the stand-out upgrade we’ve been waiting for since 2021’s model. It’s a laptop I look forward to opening up, and that’s in no small part due to its dazzling 16-inch display panel, comfortable keyboard and touchpad, and absolutely gorgeous design. If it can be found for around $2,000/£2,000, the Zephyrus M16 makes for a favourable gaming laptop purchase that, if you’re like me, you’ll easily adore. It boasts the performance and features that anyone would want in a high-priced gaming laptop, while keeping it relatively portable despite its sizable 16-inch display. Asus’ Zephyrus laptops are known to be among the best gaming laptops around, and the M16 perpetuates that trend. However, if you’re after a smidgen more gaming power, check out our Alienware m17 R4 review.

Overall, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 ranks highly in our evaluation today. Its blend of features, performance, aesthetics, and pricing places this ASUS gaming laptop in an enviable position. Not only does it do things quickly and ring up at a reasonable price, but it won't break your back in a backpack or look janky at a LAN party. Everyone in the market for a high-end gaming notebook would do well to give this ASUS machine a look, and its exceptional standing has earned it a HotHardware Recommended award.

We liked the 15.6-inch Zephyrus M15 that we reviewed a couple of years ago, which provided good gaming performance and an attractive slimline design at a competitive price. That model was succeeded by last year’s 16-inch Asus ROG Zephyrus M16, which has now received a rapid update with this new 2022 edition. The Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 (2022) is a little larger than its predecessor, measuring 19.9mm thick and weighing 2.0kg, compared to 18.9mm and 1.9kg for the M15. That’s still a good weight for a powerful 16-inch laptop such as this, though, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble carrying it with you when you need to leave home. And when it comes to gaming performance, the Zephyrus M16 leaves its predecessor trailing in its wake. This 2022 model now steps up to a 12th generation Intel Core i9-2900H processor, which boasts no less than 14 processor cores, which includes eight ‘efficiency’ cores that run at 3.8GHz for less demanding tasks, and six ‘performance’ cores that can hit 5.0GHz for gaming and other high-end tasks.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
