Lenovo's new ThinkPad T14s Gen 7 is lighter than ever, but the performance stagnates

The ThinkPad T14s is a premium business laptop, which is sitting right between the regular ThinkPad T14 and the business flagship X1 Carbon. The new Gen 7 model is lighter than before, but the overall level of performance did not really change.

Lenovo offers plenty of 14-inch business laptops and the ThinkPad T14s is one of the premium offerings. It is sitting right between the regular ThinkPad T14 (which offers excellent maintenance and repair options) as well as the business flagship ThinkPad X1 Carbon, which has a bigger focus on mobility. Lenovo now managed to reduce the weight of the new Gen 7 model of the T14s, so it is even closer to the X1 Carbon. Our review configuration with an AMD processor tips the scale at around 1.2 kg, so it is actually just 60 grams heavier compared to the latest X1 Carbon. This is a noticeable difference compared to the T14 with almost 1.5 kg, even though the lower weight also requires compromises in terms of maintenance options. The memory of the T14s is soldered and neither the battery, nor the keyboard, can as easily be replaced as on the T14.

Lenovo once again offers AMD as well as Intel processors, but the overall level of performance did not really improve. The cooling performance of the new T14s was improved, so the multi-core performance of the familiar AMD CPU (still Zen 5) is a bit higher, but the graphics performance of the Radeon 860M is lower compared to the previous model, which was still available with the Radeon 880M. The same applies for the Intel model, because Lenovo only uses Panther Lake processors with the slow iGPUs. The CPU performance is once again slightly better, but the graphics performance is worse compared to the old Arc Graphics 140V. The X1 Carbon on the other hand is also available with Intel's Core Ultra X chips, which are equipped with the very powerful Arc B390 iGPU. However, these configurations are extremely expensive at around €4000.

The display situation is also equal between the two models. In addition to the 60 Hz IPS screens, you can also get a high-resolution OLED touchscreen with a matte surface. We are currently working on the review of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon (both IPS as well as OLED) and can offer more comparison data soon. All in all, the new ThinkPad T14s is a very good business laptop with a bigger focus on mobility. Please see our comprehensive review for more details.
