Mix Fold 5 and HyperOS 4 to start ahead of the Xiaomi 18

A first hands-on photo of that new foldable—presumably named the Xiaomi Mix Fold 5—featuring a wider 4:3 display on the inside had already leaked a few weeks ago, though at that time only the cover display was visible. The leaker’s Weibo post was deleted shortly afterward. However, screenshots and images have survived, albeit not in particularly high quality. In a recent tweet, Indian leaker Kartikey Singh confirms the theory already put forward by Digital Chat Station a few weeks ago, that Xiaomi doesn't plan to launch the new foldable alongside the Xiaomi 18 series in late September but a few weeks earlier, in early September.
 

HyperOS 4 promo images reveal an Apple-inspired design

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 5 leak is exciting from a second perspective as well, since it also reveals a glimpse of the new HyperOS 4 design, which will be preinstalled on the foldable mini-tablet for the first time. Apparently Xiaomi was quite inspired by Apple’s plans, not only regarding the upcoming iPhone Ultra form factor, but also the “Liquid Glass” design of newer iOS versions which appears to make it's way to HyperOS 4 as a few leaked promo images of the new Xiaomi Android skin demonstrate:
 

HyperOS 4 brings new AI Features and a redesign

The software update, which is expected to roll out to many existing Xiaomi phones and tablets over the next few months, is shown in a few promotional images featuring the new “Soft Glass Design”, at least according to a machine translation from the original Chinese text. These images come from another Weibo user and, in addition to the visual redesign, also showcase some new features of the next major OS update for Xiaomi users. For example, the promos show the new lock screen, stacked widgets on the home screen, a redesign of the Xiaomi Device Center, and various design elements such as different folder sizes and a smart grid for icons. 

Xiaomi also promises improved performance and new features for HyperOS 4, with the latter primarily focused on AI. At least the Chinese version of HyperOS 4 will feature an enhanced “Super Xiao AI” assistant, though global versions of HyperOS 4 are likely to include Google Gemini instead. Also worth mentioning is the new “Smart Input Option” for the Xiaomi keyboard, which can now translate and transcribe text using AI. There will also be an AI-optimized note-taking feature apparently.
