Intel NUC11 Essential Kit alias Atlas Canyon with Intel Pentium Silver N6005 and Intel Celeron N4505 review
Intel have released their NUC 11 Essential Kit series under the pseudonym Atlas Canyon, which uses Jasper Lake processors. The barebone versions of the PCs are quite affordable. At the time of testing, the system with an Intel Celeron N4505 costs around $129 and the version of the Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon with an Intel Pentium Silver N6005 costs around $229. Barebone systems are often sold without RAM and SSDs, which should be kept in mind when working out costs. A license for the operating system is also not included in the price. For our test, we installed 16 GB DDR4 RAM and a 512 GB SSD into both of our test devices.
The comparison devices, which have similar specs, are listed in the following table.

Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon in detail
Case
The Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon is all black and doesn't have any high-shine surfaces. At first glance, the plastic case looks a little cheap. The actual tactile feel of the case is much better, however - the device is very sturdy thanks to its inner metal supports. This is very similar to other devices in the NUC series and the manufacturer doesn't make any exceptions for the Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon. When it comes to size, we can see a bit of a difference compared to other models in the series. The mini PC has a footprint of 13.5 x 11.5 centimetres - optically, this relatively small device is reminiscent of the Intel NUC Pro Chassis Element. Technically, they are built very differently from one another. The Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon can be attached to a monitor using the supplied VESA mount.
Connectivity
The Intel NUC 11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon has pretty standard connectivity for a mini PC in this device class. Six USB Type-A ports are more than enough for everyday use. You can connect monitors via DisplayPort or HDMI. Both devices are fitted the exact same, so we have refrained from presenting them separately.
Communication
The Intel NUC11 Essential Kit features Intel's own make of WLAN module, the Wireless AC 9462. Its performance is good compared to its competitors - maybe even better at times. Unfortunately, we still measured transmission rates significantly slower than the average for the mini PCs we tested. Both models of the Intel NUC 11 Essential Kit rely on the same WLAN module, which is why we got almost identical results for each one. We used the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 as our test router in this test.

The mini PC comes with a 65-watt power adapter and a mounting plate for the VESA mount.
Maintenance
The bottom of the Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon can be opened easily, as the bottom plate is only attached with four screws. Inside, the RAM slots and M.2 port are easily accessed. If you want to clean the CPU fan, you will have to further take apart the device.
Performance - 4 cores make everyday use considerably smoother
The Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon has a few Jasper Lake options - in our test, we will be taking a closer look at the Intel Celeron N4505 and the Intel Pentium Silver N6005. Due to the Intel Celeron N4505 only having 2 cores, this model quickly meets its limits. For everyday use, the Intel Pentium Silver N6005 is definitely the more sensible choice - its 4 cores provide a noticeable improvement in performance. However, for specific uses with a lighter operating system, the Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon with an Intel Celeron N4505 definitely still has its place. According to its specs, Linux is also supported by this model.

Testing conditions
We ran all performance tests using the energy profile "balanced". We didn't change the CPU's performance - instead, we left it in auto mode in accordance with the BIOS settings.
Processor
The Jasper Lake series' processors feature 2 cores in the Intel Celeron N4505 and 4 cores in the Intel Pentium Silver N6005. The dual-core SoC struggled quite a bit during our test, whereas the model with 4 cores did a considerably better job. Even the Intel Pentium Silver N6005's single-core performance was better, although the same SoC performed better in the Newsmay AC8 .
Even so, you have to consider where the device is intended on being used: For smaller, embedded systems with limited responsibilities using Linux as an operating system, the Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon with an Intel Celeron N4505 is definitely a valid and cost-effective option. If the system needs to run Windows, then we would recommend getting the Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon with an Intel Pentium N6005.

Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon vs. Cinebench R15 Multi Loop
We got our first look at the devices' cooling capabilities in the Cinebench R15 continuous loop test. Both test systems' performances remained stable over the 50 cycles. Compared to the Newsmay AC8, our test sample with the same SoC yielded a much better result thanks to its active cooling system. Due to the Intel Celeron N4505's number of cores, the system simply could not keep up with its competitors and ended up in last place with 193.9 points.
System performance
We saw similar results in the synthetic system performance benchmarks. The Intel NUC11 Essential Kit with an Intel Pentium Silver N6005 was able to compete with the NiPoGi GK3Plus, which also has a quad-core SoC - the Intel N95. However, the Intel N95 is a much newer SoC, which resulted in 10-25 per cent better performance. The test sample with an Intel Celeron N4505 even outperformed the Newsmay AC6-M, which has 4 cores. In the RAM tests, both our test samples were able to perform well compared to their competitors.

Storage devices
As mentioned in our introduction, the Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon is a barebone system. For our test, we installed a 512 GB SSD from Western Digital. The kitted-out model delivered quick and stable transmission rates. Intel use the bottom plate to cool the device - it already comes fitted with a heat conduction pad. The Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon can only be fitted with one SSD.

Graphics card and gaming performance
The Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon has an Intel UHD integrated graphics card from the Jasper Lake series. The Intel Pentium Silver N6005's iGPU has 32 EUs and the Intel Celeron N4505 only has 16 EUs. The difference in performance becomes very obvious looking at the systems' synthetic 3D performance.
In both cases, the built-in iGPU is not enough for gaming. Taking a look at the list of games we tested, you will see that they yielded barely any playable frame rates.
Further Intel UHD benchmarks (Jasper Lake) can be found here.

Pros
Cons
Verdict - perfect for simple office work
We took a look at the Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon, a mini PC with two different systems - which differed quite a bit in performance. Both test devices share the same cases and motherboards. The Intel Celeron N4505 is a dual-core SoC, which nowadays only really has limited uses in everyday life. We see a clear opportunity for use within very specific scenarios and with adapted software. The Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas with an Intel Pentium Silver N6005 definitely has its place in everyday office work. The SoC features 4 cores and, thus, provides better performance.
The Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon is perfect for use in specialized scenarios. For everyday use using Windows as an operating system, you should definitely go for the processor with 4 cores.
Regarding connectivity, a compromise has been made in leaving out modern ports such as USB4 or Thunderbolt. Even so, the number of ports is more than enough for the systems' intended uses. Their WLAN performances were somewhat disappointing, but in the bigger scheme of things, they still did better than their competitors. These small systems will likely not have to deal with large amounts of data, anyway. Much more important is stable performance - something which both systems were more than capable of delivering. WLAN and CPU performance remained stable at all times - even over a longer period of time. The same thing could be seen with the SSD, which provided stable performance at continuous load.
Purely from an optical standpoint, the Intel NUC11 Essential Kit - Atlas Canyon is a rather inconspicuous mini PC. Even so, it has a high-quality finish and is in no way produced cheaply. It is made well and without any flaws, even if the plastic case looks a little cheap at first glance. Nowadays, there are lots of competitors in the field of mini PCs - but not that many in a price range between $150-250. However, you can't forget to calculate the price of RAM and SSD into your budget, as this is a barebone system. This leads us to determine the NiPoGi GK3Plus and the Geekom MiniAir 11 as this mini PC's biggest competitors.
