After we gave you a first look at the Insta360 Luna Ultra retail packaging, fresh Luna Ultra leaks have populated social media, providing a comprehensive deep dive into the features and hardware of the gimbal camera.
The series of "key specs" suggests that Insta360 is aiming to redefine the pocket gimbal category by moving toward a dual-camera architecture reminiscent of high-end drones, and of course the upcoming DJI Osmo Pocket 4P (Pro), which will be the Luna’s direct competitor.
Insta360 Luna Ultra: Long-range 6x optical, 12x lossless zoom camera seems confirmed now
Once again, unlike previous single-lens gimbal cameras (and the single-cam Luna Pro model), the Luna Ultra boasts two snappers:
- Main lens: A 20mm equivalent wide-angle lens with a fast f/1.8 aperture.
- Telephoto lens: A 120mm equivalent lens, capable of 6x optical zoom.
The device leverages its high-resolution sensor for advanced cropping, offering 1x, 2x, 3x, 6x, and 12x zoom steps. Based on the specs, the 2x zoom is achieved via an in-sensor crop from the main 1x camera, while the 12x zoom is an in-sensor crop from the 6x telephoto module. The 3x toggle could very well be pure digital zoom.
For reference, the upcoming DJI Osmo Pocket 4P (Pro) is going to have a 3x optical zoom snapper with a 6x in-sensor crop.
Insta360 Luna Ultra has a 50MP 1-inch sensor capable of 37MP photos; up to 8K/30fps video recording
According to the leaked info, at the heart of the Luna Ultra is a 50MP 1-inch CMOS sensor capable of 37MP stills - not sure why 37MP and not 50MP, but this matches up with the DJI Osmo Pocket 4’s stills resolution. For videographers, the leaks point toward a powerhouse capable of 8K/30fps recording with a 120 Mbps bitrate.
To handle the massive data flow and low-light performance, Insta360 has reportedly integrated an AI chip into the Ultra. Some of the notable features included in the leak include:
- Pro-grade color grading: 10-bit I-Log, Dolby Vision, and Gamma Log support.
- Stabilization: A mechanical 3-axis gimbal paired with Insta360’s signature 6-axis FlowState gyroscope.
- Creative modes: Deep Track AI, Dolly Zoom, Barrel Roll (360° rotation), and Bullet Time.
Detachable touchscreen remote, 32-bit audio, Insta360 Mic Pro make the Luna Ultra a serious threat to DJI’s Osmo Pocket series
The leaks also showcase the high level of versatility in the hardware department. The Luna Ultra does indeed have a detachable OLED touchscreen display that can function as a remote control, allowing for easier framing when the camera is mounted somewhere.
When it comes to audio (which is a crucial part of a good video), the Luna supports 48 kHz 32-bit (AAC) audio and is compatible with the (unreleased) Insta360 Mic Pro (TX). Connectivity is rounded out with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, and USB-C.
Once again, the specs, the ambitious and innovative, and marketing effort we see from Insta360 prove the Insta360 Luna Ultra isn't just an attempt at something new but a serious threat to the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 and Pocket 4P.
The Insta360 Luna Ultra’s official launch date is yet to be confirmed but it can’t be far off. Stay tuned!
