Insta360 Luna Ultra prototype hands-on: 8K video, 20-60mm zoom to rival Pocket 4 Pro; unique controls

While a select group of YouTubers were recently granted hands-on access to the Insta360 Luna Ultra following NAB 2026, they were strictly prohibited from showing the device's software or detailed control layout due to the pre-production nature of the firmware.
However, that veil of secrecy has now been lifted as freshly leaked prototype images have surfaced, finally giving us a closer look at the controls and internal menus that official previews had to hide.

Hands-on prototype images (finally) show Insta360 Luna Ultra's controls/buttons: Osmo Pocket 4-like joystick; unique zoom lever?
The leaked photos reveal a rich physical interface designed for precision, featuring a joystick, what looks like a dedicated zoom lever, and a red record button. However, the most significant reveal comes from a breakdown of the on-screen menu. Apparently, the Insta360 Luna Ultra is slated to support 4K and 2.7K at 120 fps for high-end slow motion, but the real surprise is a listed 8K resolution option.
For the Luna Ultra to record native 8K video without upscaling, the sensor must have a resolution of at least 33.2MP, as 8K contains four times as many pixels as 4K (8.3MP). This suggests that if both the main and zoom snappers are to record 8K (we don’t know if that’s the case), Insta360 is likely utilizing high-resolution sensors across the board.
Insta360 Luna Ultra: Super-detailed leaked images reveal 8K resolution, full controls/buttons; 3-6x zoom camera seems confirmed
Thanks to a separate leak, the zoom range on the Ultra model has also come into focus. The surfaced close-up image of the gimbal head shows a 60mm focal length for the zoom camera, which works out to a 3x optical zoom when measured against the 20mm 1-inch main sensor.
Insta360 Luna Ultra expected zoom range: 120mm/6x lossless, 240mm/12x digital zoom
- 1x - 20mm (optical)
- 2x - 40mm (in-sensor crop)
- 3x - 60mm (optical)
- 6x - 120mm (in-sensor crop)
- 12x - 240mm (digital)
While the exact resolution of this secondary sensor remains unconfirmed, early hands-on previews on YouTube have already praised the "very impressive/long zoom range." This makes it safe to assume the resolution is high enough to allow for a 2x lossless crop, effectively bringing the usable reach to 6x. Remember, previous rumors showed us a 12x zoom toggle - this is likely the max digital zoom you'd be able to get.
Insta360 Luna Ultra vs DJI Osmo Pocket 4P (Pro): Dual-camera system with 1-inch sensors and 3x optical zoom to make the most powerful new gimbal cameras incredibly similar
Coincidence or not, the unannounced DJI Osmo Pocket 4P (Pro) has also been confirmed to feature a 3x zoom camera. It is clear that DJI and Insta360 are well aware of each other’s roadmaps and are preparing for a direct, head-to-head showdown in the vlogging market.
The Insta360 Luna Ultra and the Insta360 Luna Pro (yes, there’s a single-camera "Pro" model), are expected to launch in May/June. It won’t be all too surprising if the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P (Pro) joins Insta360's new cameras around that time.
Of course, the new Osmo Pocket 4 is already out - in case you’re impatient.
