Couch potato. The MediaPad M1 8.0 ships with a fast Kirin 910 CPU, a decent display and great battery runtimes - but while its stamina may be great, both its slightly outdated version of Android and some outdoor usability issues are disappointing. However, for less than 200 Euros (~$263), it is still a good offer.

Mid-range. The suffix "Pro" in the name of Huawei's new tablet suggests that it has some additional features that distinguish the tablet from the conventional devices. However, this is deceptive since we find a normal mid-range device for private customers. Nevertheless, our report reveals why that is not a disadvantage.

Chinese luxury. Huawei used to be content with being low-end. However, now it is entering the high-end sector. The MediaPad M5 10.8 is the current top-end tablet from Huawei. Here, the manufacturer shows off its confidence when it comes to the asking price: Even the new iPad is cheaper under certain circumstances. So the question we have here is two-fold: Is Huawei asking too much for the new slate or is its new high-end tablet really that good?

Huawei has a contender with the M5 Pro, thanks to the tablet's great battery life, nice display and good performance. The MediaPad M5, however, is sunk by its short battery life and comparatively small sound.

The Huawei MediaPad M5 is really a top-notch piece of hardware. Holding an iPad alongside the M5, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell much of a difference in build quality and looks. The biggest factor for many will be the usability and look of Android apps on this device. You may or may not be bothered by the user experience when it comes to Android. I’d recommend finding a store that sells the M5 and take a look for yourself. Overall, this is a solid device when it comes to hardware. You will have to decide if the software experience fits into your workflow and if your favorite apps are optimized enough for you.

Some might say that Huawei created the MediaPad M5 for the sake of creating a tablet as it comes with the previous generation Kirin 960 processor and marketing it as a media tablet but limiting how we consume media by removing the headphone jack. However, it is one of the better Android tablets out there and for the price of RM1,499, it is definitely a good option if you are looking for an Android tablet, as long as you can live with the compromises.

Having said that, it’s rather unfortunate that Huawei is making consumers choose one feature over another. Instead of coming up with multiple variants, Huawei should’ve concentrated their efforts to craft the perfect smartphone – one that would overthrow the competition in one fell swoop, and one that embodies all the great features of both the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.

We’ll update this hands-on review with a proper verdict once we’ve had time to fully benchmark the tablets and also test the new Desktop View mode. Until then, initial impressions are mixed. The standard version could be a good mid-range tablet, but the Pro may struggle against its Windows-based rivals.

Huawei's Mediapad M5 could have been the product to face down the $329 iPad, but the larger model costs at least $70 more.

The new MediaPad M5 high-end Android tablets deliver good performance for the expected price (to date, rumored at around $400). The slim and elegant form factor is a little thicker than the Samsung Tab S3 but for the 10.8-inch form factor is larger.

Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4
The tablet industry has been quite stagnant for the past couple of years. There has been very little in the way of movement, particularly with tablets based on Google's Android operating system. However, Huawei announced new MediaPad models at the Mobile World Congress 2018, namely a small 8.4-inch model and a larger 10.8-inch Pro model with a stylus. With its aluminum body, smooth back and curved corners, Huawei’s 8.4-inch MediaPad does not tread new ground for tablets. It feels well-built and is super-light at 316g. Thanks to having an 8.4-inch display and relatively little in the way of screen bezels on the left and right side, Huawei has managed to make the M5 compact enough for single-handed use, it can also easily be slipped into a pocket or bag. The front of the device is dominated by the display, but unlike many of the new phones coming to the market this year, it retained a bezel around it. This is fine on a tablet, since it gives the hands something to grip onto. A fingerprint scanner sits below the display and works superbly; a Huawei logo and front-facing camera sit above the display. The overall design is clean and basic. One of the most pleasing elements of this tablet is its screen. The aspect ratio is unusual: 16:10. With its 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution, the 8.4-inch display is super crisp while offering lovely clean whites, vibrant colors and, considering it is an LCD panel, great contrast.
When users are playing movies, the Huawei ClariVu technology uses intelligent algorithms to adjust unclear frames or drops in contrast ratio to deliver a better viewing experience. Huawei used massive amounts of research data to develop a display that is safe and comfortable for the eyes. Eye Comfort Mode reduces harmful blue light to make it safer and easier to read. And the Huawei MediaPad M5's display automatically adjusts to the color temperature of the surrounding light. Inside this Huawei tablet, users will find an octa-core Kirin 960S, which is essentially a tweaked version of the chip that powered most of Huawei's flagship phones in 2017. The performance is therefore appropriate for a high-end tablet. Each game loaded without any complaining or noticeable delay. The Huawei MediaPad M5 supports Hi-Res audio, which is an industry standard for sound quality. Every facet is captured perfectly, keeping treble sweet and bass anchored for significantly truer, more immersive listening experience. Tuned by the renowned acoustic legend Harman Kardon® Audio, the tablet delivers quality sound with more bass and no distortion. Huawei Listen audio creates a perfect soundscape to produce 3D sound that is richer, more layered, and penetrating, too. Finally, concerning autonomy, it takes only 1.9 hours to fully charge the Huawei MediaPad M5. Its 5,100 mAh (TYP) battery and smart power-saving technology allow users to enjoy 1080p videos for up to 11 hours.

Pricing for the MediaPad M5 starts at 349 Euros and ranges upwards to 599 Euros depending on size, storage, connectivity, and whether you opt for the Pro or standard versions. As we mentioned previously, when it comes to Android tablets, the amount of options out there are very limited, but the MediaPad M5 line is a very solid offering from Huawei. These are some of the best Android tablets we’ve seen in a while. They’re well designed with gorgeous displays and fantastically loud speakers that make them great for multimedia purposes. They certainly live up to the MediaPad name, and if you’re into turning your tablet into an on-the-go work station, the M5 Pro offers the appropriate peripherals for both work and play.

But overall, we feel as though the MediaPad M5 Pro is more than the sum of its parts. It doesn’t have the most powerful processor, the most ram, storage, or the biggest battery. The software isn’t the cleanest or most feature-packed, but we loved every moment with the Huawei MediaPad M5 Pro. From getting some work done to watching way too many Casey Neistat videos on YouTube, it was a pleasure to use.

Huawei makes great hardware and tries to bring a good Android tablet to the enterprise. If you must use an Android tablet for work then the MediaPad M5 Pro is a decent option. However, if you are just looking for the best tablet overall, then look at an Apple iPad.

It may not be “Pro” enough for some, but this tablet is fun to use and has a great pressure sensitive stylus.

The Huawei MediaPad M5 Pro is a tablet that promises a lot, but doesn't quite deliver on its "pro" name in every department.

The MediaPad M5 Pro looks fantastic and performs fairly well, but it's let down by small details like the shoddy official keyboard and Android's limited productivity options. Still, it's cheaper than most of its comparable rivals, and will keep most users happy.

If you’re after an iPad Pro-style device which runs Android instead, the MediaPad M5 Pro ticks most of those boxes and adds a few advantages of its own. You get the same neat keyboard cover and stylus pen setup, with the added bonus that the pen is actually bundled in the box. That sharp display is perfect for media, while performance and battery life are also top notch.

There’s even more value if you’re already rocking a Huawei smartphone. They work well together. Regardless of the phone you own, chances are you’ll easily fall in love (and stay that way) if you choose to buy this slate. Whether you actually need it or not is another question.

In the same breath the M5 Pro isn't especially enthralling; there's no distinctive unique selling point... unless, of course, the to-be-announced price kicks the competition to the kerb. We'll know more about that come Huawei's press conference at Mobile World Congress 2018.

Huawei MediaPad M5 lite
The Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite is a new mid-range tablet that boasts of an aluminum unibody and a quartet of speakers. Buyers will receive a fancy-looking mid-range tablet with LTE support. The new tablet is built around a Kirin 659 processor and runs on EMUI 8.0 based on Android 8.1 Oreo. This has a different settings structure and customized apps for telephoning, messaging, the gallery etc. compared to stock Android. The device features a 10-inch 16:10 display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels. The tablet comes in two configurations which are 3 GB/32 GB and 4 GB/64 GB. It is available in Champagne Gold and Space Grey color variants. The MediaPad M5 Lite features a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, and an aspect ratio of 16:10. The average brightness is 492.2 cd/m², which is higher than those of other comparable tablets in this price range. The display does not reflect surrounding objects too much and screen content can be read easily. However, reflections become very strong under direct sunlight or a blue sky. The IPS panel of the MediaPad M5 lite has very stable viewing angles. Screen content can be read without distortions or falsified colors from almost all angles. Huawei has given the MediaPad M5 lite a metal case with a small decorative seam on the back. The top and bottom edges of the tablet have a lot of holes for the four speakers, as well as additional openings for the microphone along the top. This means that there is a row of holes all along the top of the device. Huawei MediaPad M5 lite have access to an 8-MP main camera as well as an 8-MP front camera. The latter takes good-quality portraits, as long as the subject is positioned in the center of the picture due to the fixed focus. Details are displayed nicely with only objects in the background slightly lacking sharpness. The MediaPad M5 lite can transfer data via its USB Type-C port, which, however, only offers 2.0 speeds. The USB port also functions as a charging connection. Headsets or external speakers can be connected to the tablet via the 3.5 mm audio jack. There is also a microSD card slot that allows storage to be expanded by up to 256 GB. The tablet is backed by a 7500 mAh battery. Additionally, the device ships with the company’s M-Pen lite stylus, which supports 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity. Notably, the stylus will only be accessible in select markets. Furthermore, as mentioned, the company is touting the quad-speaker setup tuned by Harman/Kardon that works with the company's Histen 5.0 sound system to replicate surround sound experience. This tablet’s performance is sufficient for many everyday workloads. Modern games can also be played on this device, although users might have to content themselves with average graphics settings. It is most suitable for casual users who mainly use the tablet for entertainment purpose. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

The best thing the MediaPad Lite M5 has going for it is its colorful 1080p display and its quad speakers. Both are great for media consuming while the kids mode features aren’t bad if you regulate your kids to that section of the tablet. For some slight day to day you can get by and kids using it for watching their fave YT or movies will be okay. Trying to do a good deal of multitasking it wouldn’t handle the best. Its at a fairly good price though available for $299.99 which once again includes the stylus.

At $299 it’s a solid competitor to Apple’s $329 iPad. For Android families who want a capable machine for entertaining the household, the Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite is up to the task.

This device certainly cannot compete with the top of the tablet market; your iPad Pros, Pixel Slates, Windows detachables, et al. But as a device for very casual media consumption, light creative work, and family use, it does its job well. It’s got a good screen, even better speakers, solid battery life, and an accessible software experience.

There are a lot of reviews on Huawei phones with slightly above average ratings (as of 2016).
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
ARM Mali-450 MP4: OpenGL ES 2.0 GPU for ARM based SoCs with 4 fragment processors and 1 vertex processor.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Qualcomm Adreno 405: Integrated graphics card for ARM based SoCs. Depending on the used SoC the clock rate is around 500 MHz and features 48 unified shaders.
ARM Mali-T830 MP2: Integrated graphics card for smartphones and tablets with two clusters (MP2) supporting OpenGL ES 3.2.
ARM Mali-G51 MP4: Integrated mid range graphics card with 4 clusters. Beware the results in the Mate 20 Lite, that detects benchmarks and boosts the performance.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
