Reviews for the Huawei MatePad 11.5
The Huawei MatePad 11.5 has a large IPS display and uses a modern Snapdragon 7 processor with plenty of storage. Huawei also offers a pen as well as a keyboard cover. Even though you have to make do without Google services, this isn't much of a hindrance with a productive tablet.

When it comes to tablets, there is no single dominant case use to look at. Others use it for gaming, others for consuming content and a few more might use it for productivity. The latter is where the Huawei MatePad 11 Papermatte Edition excels at. Bundled with a kickstand case, detachable keyboard, and pressure sensitive M-Pencil, you are looking at complete productivity solution here. It will certainly pass as a laptop replacement and, in some instances, maybe even perform better than a regular laptop. Those looking for an everyday tablet with productivity as priority, taking notes or drawing will definitely love the MatePad 11 PaperMatte Edition. And, did I say I was able to write more than half of this review on the tablet itself and without using my reading glasses? I would definitely get this tablet for that sole reason alone.

The Huawei MatePad 11.5 PaperMatte is a device constructed around one feature – a specially etched screen that promises to reduce eye strain. It does precisely that, which makes it almost unlike anything else on the market. However, with no access to the Google Play Store, its successes are outweighed by its major weakness; that the competition can do more at a lower price point.

Huawei MatePad 11.5″ is a versatile and, most importantly, affordable device that will delight you with multitasking and smooth processes. The tablet will become an assistant in work and leisure. However, there are some simplifications, but more on that later. The MatePad is easy to carry, as it weighs very little, even with the keyboard case. It can be supplemented with a wireless mouse or stylus to expand its capabilities. So is it worth investing in the hero of our review? Read about all the pros and cons, and the decision will come to you.

Huawei continues to make great hardware, with the MatePad PaperMatte being a compact and comfortable device to use. The display reacts well to strong light sources, while generally making things easy on the eye. It’s also good that you get the Smart Keyboard and M-Pencil as part of the deal, even if the former wasn’t that impressive. The achilles heel remains the absence of the Google Play store and Google services. It’s been a problem for a while, and who knows if the US will rescind its ban in the future. Until then, even with Huawei developing some good apps and allowing APKs to be downloaded and installed, the app gap makes the PaperMatte less appealing than something like the iPad, OnePlus Pad or any other quality Android tablet. If the ban ends tomorrow, then the PaperMatte could instantly become and excellent option, until then it’s something of a niche product.

I approach every new Huawei device with an open mind, and am usually impressed by the hardware on show. It’s a shame the software experience just isn’t on the same level, at least for Western audiences that are dependent on Google-based apps. That’s unfortunately the case with the Huawei MatePad 11.5in. While you can get by with the web browser, Huawei’s own apps and the limited official selection available through App Gallery, you’re tying one arm behind your back compared to any number of rival tablets from other brands. Even though it comes bundled with a keyboard in the box, I think there’s better value to be found elsewhere and adding an accessory or two later when you need it.

Should you buy any of these two tablets? Well, they’re not for everyone, and only you can answer that question. The first thing you need to decide is whether you can live without Google apps, or are you willing to use GSpace. Then, if you’re ready to use Petal Search and app repositories. If the answer to those questions is ‘yes’, then sure, considering both of these tablets. They’re basically the same in all aspects except the displays. They are considerably different. Each of them has its advantages, so be careful which one you choose. If you’re looking for a more regular display experience, go for the Huawei MatePad 11.5-inch. You’ll get a nice IPS LCD panel with a high refresh rate, with the usual glare problem. The ‘PaperMatte’ edition is great for some people, but it’s not for everyone. You may not see your reflection on the screen, but the light creates a white glare if you’re looking at the tablet from the side. If you’re looking at it straight-on, that’s not an issue at all.

The Huawei MatePad 11.5 is, in many ways, an attractive device for the price. It has a solid if uninspiring design, a good screen, nice speakers, solid battery life and a theoretically powerful and modern processor within. You could look at a spec sheet and easily think “that’s enough tablet for me”, and if it came with the Play Store in tow, you would certainly be right. Without an easy way to get important apps, or those that work well, it’s impossible to experience any of the mod-cons of owning a nice tablet without putting in work. Where an equivalently priced device from Lenovo, Xiaomi, Samsung or any other manufacturer, the question ‘why buy Huawei’ comes to the fore. It is for this reason that I recommend you don’t buy the MatePad 11.5, and look at our selection of budget alternatives instead.

The Huawei MatePad 2023 aka the new MatePad 11.5 is a surprisingly effective and affordable compact tablet for paperwork that has a large display with long battery life and the preinstalled PC-level WPS Office app for offline spreadsheets, word processing and presentations. It still retains access to Google apps and they’re throwing in a free keyboard and M-Pencil stylus which makes it a compelling choice especially for those on a budget.

75.8%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
