An interesting trend in the tablet space this year has been compact flagship models, a category that previously had very few options. This year, more Chinese manufacturers have announced tablets that not only have a display that falls between 8 and 9 inches but are also powered by flagship chipsets. The trend has been a welcome departure from the large screen flagship models that have gotten even bigger over the last couple of years.
The compact flagship Android tablet segment already has options such as the Lenovo Legion Y700 (Gen 4), the Redmi K Pad, and the RedMagic Astra (available on Amazon for $699). Recently, it was reported that OnePlus and Huawei will also launch mini tablets with premium specs. Now, the same source has revealed three more brands are also developing compact flagship tablets.
According to Digital Chat Station, iQOO, Oppo, and Honor have begun the development of compact tablets. He also added that the trend will continue next year as manufacturers will compete against one another with their compact phones and compact tablets.
In a separate post, the source revealed that Honor's compact tablet will have a screen size of about 7.9 inches which will make it smaller than any of the existing options. The RedMagic Astra has a 9.06-inch display, the Redmi K Pad and Lenovo Legion Y700 (Gen 4) both have an 8.8-inch display. Huawei's upcoming tablet is also reported to have an 8.8-inch OLED panel.
A common feature for these compact Android tablets is that they have been marketed as being suitable for gamers. That will most likely be the case with iQOO and Honor's tablets too. However, it remains to be seen if Huawei, Honor, and OnePlus's tablets will toe the same marketing line, too.
