The Samsung Galaxy A53 costs $350, and although it doesn’t support 66W fast charging, it has a Super AMOLED display, great camera performance, and a similarly excellent battery life. Samsung has also been one of the best OEMs in the past few years when it gets to software updates and support, and it may be a better option. Now, should you spend $100 more for the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G? It depends on your requirements, but if you don’t plan to take many photos, and listening to music isn’t a priority, the HONOR X9 5G will serve you well. It has plenty of power for all of your gaming and multitasking needs, and it will easily last you a full day of charge, or two days, depending on how heavily you use it. The HONOR X9 5G has a beautiful design, 5G, and respectable specifications for the price. It packs an excellent two-day battery, and it also comes with a super-fast 66W fast charger. Yes, but don’t expect great photos out of it. The Honor X9 ticks a lot of boxes, but photography isn’t one of them. You really need to be prepared to be unhappy with the images produced by the X9, especially if you’re not patient enough to work around the software problems. A lot of budget phone in this price range struggle in this department, though, like the US-only OnePlus Nord N20, so Honor isn’t exactly faring any worse than the competition. The software is another department that Honor just doesn’t nail. The home screen doesn’t feel well-thought-out with its lack of shortcuts and its tendency to throw up a different panel than expected when you hit the home button. Honor’s battery-saving measures are also utterly punishing for anyone who relies on apps running smoothly in the background, and to find out what’s wrong, you first need to know what the culprit is and then check in system settings. It’s also a bummer that it ships with Android 11, even though Android 13 is already around the corner. That said, the Honor X9 has quite some going for it.

Honor X8

The latest to join the Honor family is the Honor X8, which should not be confused with the 2018’s Honor 8X. In terms of its design and display, this device’s thin and lightweight body definitely stands out. However at 177g and 7.5mm thick, it is quite a tall phone. With such a design, one-handed use especially for people with smaller hands is quite difficult. But, it is worth mentioning that Honor has at least made sure that the volume rocker and power button on the right edge of the device is comfortably accessible for anybody. In addition, the power button further doubles as a quick and responsive fingerprint scanner. Apart from that, on the bottom edge of the device, there is a mono speaker, a Type-C USB input for charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack and the primary microphone. The right edge on the other hand, houses a dual-SIM tray for 4G compatible cards. Although Honor X8 has been designed with some thought, this phone is not a metal phone all over. The back and frame of the smartphone is made of plastic. There is also a well-positioned quad-camera setup with a centered flash module at the back of the device.

As for the front, the Honor X8 has been equipped with a 6.7-inch IPS LCD panel. It is worth noting that this is a flat Full HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a punch hole design and good sunlight legibility. While the device does not have the pop of an OLED display, it is still decent for watching content, especially given its size. For general day-to-day interaction, the smoothness of the 90Hz refresh rate can be felt. However, the processor on the device struggles to keep up. In terms of its performance, the Honor X8 sports a 6nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. However, thanks to RAM Booster, the smartphone can use an extra 2GB of its storage as RAM to keep additional applications in memory.

As mentioned before, this smartphone features a quad-camera primary setup although, only two of these lenses will be used for the most part. Firstly, the 64MP wide lens which will do the bulk of the photography, followed by the 5MP ultra-wide lens for the occasional wider angle shot. The other two lenses includes the 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors which frankly does not contribute much. While the 2MP macro lens is useful for occasional close-up images but its resolution is too low for any meaningful clicks. The main wide lens do cater for some decent pictures in good lighting conditions. As it is quite common with budget smartphones, battery life is usually a strong suit. And it is no different with the Honor X8 as with its 4,000mAh cell, it can provide up to two days of battery backup without any sweat. Overall, it is a great device to be explored depending on the need and preference of the user.

The Honor X7’s global battery score ranks it above average in our entire database. The autonomy was really optimized when testing in factory default settings. Indeed, it showed excellent performance during the typical usage scenario, with low discharge currents, day and night, and excellent autonomy on the go, especially when scrolling on social apps and using GPS navigation. When tested in calibrated mode, the gaming and calling tests showed decent autonomy, but the device struggled when streaming video and music. We noticed that the battery levels 8%, 28%, 48%, 68%, and 88% displayed by the UI lasted only 30 seconds, whatever the use case, even during the charging tests. When the device reached 2%, the device would automatically turn off after 30 seconds.

Honor X40i

The latest to join the Honor family is none other than the Honor X40i. It is quite a decent 5G smartphone which came in this year. In terms of its display, this model has been equipped with a 6.7 inches IPS LCD display panel with a 391-pixel density. This is definitely one of the few smartphones out there with larger screens. While it may be quite an issue for those with smaller hands to handle this device, it is undeniable that the large display size allows higher resolutions. In addition, it also allows details like letters look bigger. As for its weight, this phone is considered slightly heavier than most lightweight phones out there with a weight of 0.175kg.

Apart from that, in terms of its software, this model has been incorporated with the Android 12 OS with Magic UI 6.1 custom UI. As far as its performance is concerned, the Honor X40i is powered by the 7nm MediaTek MT6833 Dimensity 700 chipset that can reach up to a 2.2GHz clocking speed. The new Magic5 Lite fixed only some of the Magic4 Lite's shortcomings from last year, with the display being the most significant upgrade. It's a rare flagship-grade OLED in this price range, but it's just not enough to persuade us. Pretty much all of the Magic5 Lite's competitors offer a similar display quality while being better in other areas. Honor's midranger still drags behind the competition in terms of raw performance, launches with outdated Android and judging by its predecessor, an update to Android 13 probably won't arrive this year. It has no stereo speakers, ships without a charger, supports only 40W charging (down from Magic4 Lite's 66W), camera quality is far behind the competition, still can't shoot 4K videos and we've seen more premium builds from the competition. Excellent battery life and a great display are the only things going for the Magic5 Lite and that just isn't enough.

Hardcore gamers might struggle with hardware limitations, but those looking for a solid, everyday smartphone will find one. Our only concern is the circular bezel at the device’s rear, which may make case shopping a bit difficult, and its so-so audio quality. Overall, a really solid offering but we couldn’t help wanting a little bit more for its price. Especially with the local smartphone market saturated with solid, affordable offerings as it is.

But, at the moment, I believe Honor still needs to progress even further, be it in terms of software or hardware, to match up with its fellow brands. For what Honor is asking for this phone, you should consider the Redmi Note 12 Pro or Pro+, both of which have OIS cameras, a much better processor, and a stereo speaker setup. And if you prefer a smartphone with a curved display, the Realme 10 Pro+ is also a better option.

The Honor X9a’s outstanding global battery score earned it a place in the top 5 of our database to date. Even though the device’s charging time was slightly longer than average, the Honor X9a offered excellent overall autonomy and efficiency, bringing 3 full days of battery life in moderate use. Excellent autonomy was particularly measured in individual usages such as gaming, calling, video and music streaming, but also for all on-the-go usages. This was confirmed by our discharge efficiency measurements, with the Honor X9a draining very low discharge currents overall, a sign of well-optimized software. The drawback to the device’s performance was that the battery gauge was inaccurate. When the screen displayed 20% capacity, the true capacity measured was only 16%. At a displayed 1% capacity, the device shut down automatically. Moreover, battery readings at various stages of the battery gauge (precisely at 12%, 17%, 43%, 50%, 65%, and 83%) only lasted only a few seconds, affecting the user experience. Overall, the Honor X9a displays a strong battery performance, particularly when compared with other devices in the Advanced segment.

The Honor X9a has a number of unique strengths as a midrange phone. You get a high quality OLED display sheathed in toughened glass, 5G connectivity along with excellent battery life and fair performance for general use. Unfortunately the phone lacks water resistance and has middling camera performance. On the bright side, the phone does offer quite a bit of value with the array of goodies they’ve bundled in the box that include a casing, charger and wired earbuds too. At the time of writing, Honor Malaysia hasn’t furnished the exact price of the Honor X9a but it should be under RM1,500 and slightly north of its predecessors RM1,199 price tag. If the Honor X9a’s official price between these two extremes, it makes for relatively fair value. Once Honor has announced the official price of the Honor X9a in Malaysia, we’ll update our review accordingly with a final score. An extremely sturdy midrange phone with a toughened OLED display, excellent battery life, a slew of generous extras bundled with it and decent performance to boot, making it ideal for general users.

The Honor X7a starts the year off by achieving the No. 1 spot in our battery ranking, thanks to its outstanding autonomy performance, which measured 3 days and 14 hours in moderate usage — the best we have tested so far. The Honor X7a’s overall battery performance overtook the Oppo Reno 6 5G, which stayed at the top of the global battery ranking since September thanks to its overall balanced performance. The X7a’s 6000 mAh battery tested the limits of autonomy and surpassed that of the previous autonomy powerhouse, the Vivo Y72 5G, which managed to bring in a slightly lower autonomy with a 5000 mAh battery. Besides a strong performance in a mixed usage scenario, the Honor X7a was also a top performer in some use cases such as gaming, calling, video, and music streaming. And finally, even when on the go and tested outside, the Honor X7a’s ability to manage its power proved to be excellent. When it came to discharge efficiency, the device drained very low discharge currents, which means that it is well-optimized. Despite its staying power, the device’s user experience was undermined by an inaccurate battery gauge. When the phone displayed 20% of power left on the screen, the true capacity was measured at close to 16%. When the device showed 1% of power on its screen, it would shut down automatically after a minute. When charging the device, the small 22.5W power adapter struggled to fill the large 6000 mAh battery. A 5-minute top-up charge provided only 4 hours of autonomy. Moreover, the charge efficiency, as well as the power adapter efficiency, was poor.
