Reviews for the Honor X9a

The new Magic5 Lite fixed only some of the Magic4 Lite's shortcomings from last year, with the display being the most significant upgrade. It's a rare flagship-grade OLED in this price range, but it's just not enough to persuade us. Pretty much all of the Magic5 Lite's competitors offer a similar display quality while being better in other areas. Honor's midranger still drags behind the competition in terms of raw performance, launches with outdated Android and judging by its predecessor, an update to Android 13 probably won't arrive this year. It has no stereo speakers, ships without a charger, supports only 40W charging (down from Magic4 Lite's 66W), camera quality is far behind the competition, still can't shoot 4K videos and we've seen more premium builds from the competition. Excellent battery life and a great display are the only things going for the Magic5 Lite and that just isn't enough.

It would be a disservice to say that the HONOR X9a is all about its OLED display, which is in any case a lovely addition to the X series because its camera array and its picture-taking capabilities are of superior quality. The kind of pictures you show your friends and family and get told “Oh yeah, I see what you mean now.” For the recommended price of R11 999, you get a great-looking smartphone, with a great camera. Hardcore gamers might struggle with hardware limitations, but those looking for a solid, everyday smartphone will find one. Our only concern is the circular bezel at the device’s rear, which may make case shopping a bit difficult, and its so-so audio quality. Overall, a really solid offering but we couldn’t help wanting a little bit more for its price. Especially with the local smartphone market saturated with solid, affordable offerings as it is.

After going through each section of the Honor X9a, one thing is clear, you are getting decent camera results and the display quality is quite good to use outdoors. But at the same time, the performance aspect does feel underwhelming to the competition since it didn’t provide a high-tier gaming experience. Anyway, the battery optimization of this phone is pretty superb, so you can expect long-lasting screen time. On top of that, it also supports features like NFC, inbox Charger, and many more things that you can explore. Overall, the phone is an average deal if you are looking for a complete package phone at the same price range. You can choose the Vivo S16 for a better user experience and perks.

In January 2023, the Honor company released a mid-range 5G smartphone known as Honor X9a. The Honor X9a smartphone comes with a massive Li-Po 5100 mAh battery that gives you more than 6+ hours of screen time. As for charging support, you also get a 40W wired fast charging. Besides this, you can choose this phone from three fabulous shade options that include Titanium Silver, Emerald Green, and Midnight Black. At the front, you will obtain a 6.67-inch AMOLED display panel that renders 1B colors, a high 120Hz refresh rate, and an 800 nits brightness rating. As far as the cameras are concerned, you are getting a triple camera setup that includes a 64MP primary camera with a 5MP ultrawide and a 2MP macro lens. In terms of the selfie, the 16MP selfie camera is present on the front side. As for video recording, the phone can record up to 1080p resolution videos from both cameras. Under the performance end, the Honor X9a delivers exceptional power with the 6nm Qualcomm SM6375 Snapdragon 695 5G chipset that renders up to 2×2.2GHz cloaking speed. At the same time, you are getting Android 12 OS with the Magic UI 6.1 user interface. Moving to the internal storage, the Honor X9a smartphone is accompanied by the 128GB to 256GB space that will club alongside 6GB to 8GB RAM support, while there’s no secondary card slot available. As for price point, the Honor X9a smartphone cost around $345 (Rs 28,499 in India) approx.

To conclude, the HONOR X9a 5G’s durable display, amazing design, and 5100 mAh battery make it an undeniably solid phone. However, we strongly believe that the HONOR X9a 5G’s best feature is its price. Retailing for only Php 16,990 for the 8GB and 256GB models, the X9a 5G is simply in a class of its own. While it doesn’t have the best camera quality out there or the best speaker experience, you simply cannot find a better package than what the HONOR X9a 5G has to offer, especially at this price. Personally, if I didn’t love taking photos, I could easily see myself happily daily driving the X9a 5G without any problem.

Yes, as long as your focus isn’t hardcore gaming. The HONOR X9a 5G has all the things a regular user could ask for – an incredibly tough screen, a good primary camera, an excellent design, and long battery life. If your primary focus is gaming, then probably don’t bother – but if your interests lie in the stuff I mentioned, then the HONOR X9a 5G should be the phone you buy as we found in our review of it for the Philippines.

So, with everything considered, I really don’t understand what’s Honor up to with this phone! I really like its design, it’s really good! The curved display on a mid-range phone is also nice to have! It has good battery backup and I can live with its UI too! But compromising on very important aspects like performance, cameras, and stereo speakers doesn’t make me feel like the good old Honor is back. I remember Honor used to offer incredible midrange smartphones back in the day like the Honor Play with an aluminum back, powerful Kirin 970 chip, and a 4K-recording capable camera—all at a pretty reasonable price. So I really wished the company could bring back that legacy instead. But, at the moment, I believe Honor still needs to progress even further, be it in terms of software or hardware, to match up with its fellow brands. For what Honor is asking for this phone, you should consider the Redmi Note 12 Pro or Pro+, both of which have OIS cameras, a much better processor, and a stereo speaker setup. And if you prefer a smartphone with a curved display, the Realme 10 Pro+ is also a better option.

The HONOR X9a 5G may seem a little lacking at first but when you take into account its affordable price of RM1,499, it’s easy to dismiss a number of its drawbacks. It provides solid value for the money you’re spending so if you’re not looking to spend much on a smartphone, this will definitely serve you well. You just have to get used to Magic UI if you’re not familiar with it, or opt for a different launcher.

The Honor X9a’s outstanding global battery score earned it a place in the top 5 of our database to date. Even though the device’s charging time was slightly longer than average, the Honor X9a offered excellent overall autonomy and efficiency, bringing 3 full days of battery life in moderate use. Excellent autonomy was particularly measured in individual usages such as gaming, calling, video and music streaming, but also for all on-the-go usages. This was confirmed by our discharge efficiency measurements, with the Honor X9a draining very low discharge currents overall, a sign of well-optimized software. The drawback to the device’s performance was that the battery gauge was inaccurate. When the screen displayed 20% capacity, the true capacity measured was only 16%. At a displayed 1% capacity, the device shut down automatically. Moreover, battery readings at various stages of the battery gauge (precisely at 12%, 17%, 43%, 50%, 65%, and 83%) only lasted only a few seconds, affecting the user experience. Overall, the Honor X9a displays a strong battery performance, particularly when compared with other devices in the Advanced segment.

The Honor X9a has a number of unique strengths as a midrange phone. You get a high quality OLED display sheathed in toughened glass, 5G connectivity along with excellent battery life and fair performance for general use. Unfortunately the phone lacks water resistance and has middling camera performance. On the bright side, the phone does offer quite a bit of value with the array of goodies they’ve bundled in the box that include a casing, charger and wired earbuds too. At the time of writing, Honor Malaysia hasn’t furnished the exact price of the Honor X9a but it should be under RM1,500 and slightly north of its predecessors RM1,199 price tag. If the Honor X9a’s official price between these two extremes, it makes for relatively fair value. Once Honor has announced the official price of the Honor X9a in Malaysia, we’ll update our review accordingly with a final score. An extremely sturdy midrange phone with a toughened OLED display, excellent battery life, a slew of generous extras bundled with it and decent performance to boot, making it ideal for general users.

Qualcomm Adreno 619: Integrated (in the Snapdragon 750G) graphics card based on the Adreno 600 architecture. The performance is a lot better than the old Adreno 612.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

SD 695 5G: Fast mid-range ARM SoC with 8 CPU Kryo 660 cores (two fast 2.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A78 based cores in a cluster and six power saving ARM Cortex-A55 based cores at 1.7 GHz) and a lower mid range Adreno 619 GPU. Supports only Wi-Fi 5 and is manufactured in the 6 nm.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.Honor:
In 2014 Huawei created the sub brand Honor and offers certain smartphone series under this name. Occasionally the products are also called Huawei Honor.
The market share of Honor products is manageable, but there are several reviews on Honor smartphones with average ratings (as of 2016).
74.86%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
