Reviews for the Oppo A98

OPPO’s top A-series variant for 2023 is a decent mid-range phone with all it has to offer. However, it faces tough competition with its asking price and lack of optimizations for its main camera. Otherwise, the A98 is a big upgrade over last year’s A96 beyond having 5G connectivity.

For RM1399, the OPPO A98 5G has a very competitive price for a mid-range phone. The advantages of this phone include a 120Hz screen, a long-lasting battery life, a unique microscope camera and an easy-to-use UI, making this a suitable device for most people. All in all, it's a budget-friendly 5G smartphone with pretty attractive features and functionality. For alternatives, you can consider the realme 10 Pro for its higher resolution 108MP camera sensor for RM1299. Also, the OPPO A98 5G is comparable to the POCO X5 Pro 5G (check out our review here), which is RM1499 with a Snapdragon 778G chipset. So what should you go for? Well, the choice is yours.

Finally – to answer the question – should you buy the OPPO A98? Well, I do think that it has its own merits. ColorOS is indeed quite good and has its own specialty that I really like but the amount of bloatware is insane. Let’s not forget about the system ads pushed out by OPPO’s own App Market too. The cameras though… as mentioned earlier – it’s situational. It’s okay in certain scenes, but once the brightness turns down, that’s when it struggles. So, for the price of RM1,399, you be the judge. I think it’s still too expensive for what it has to offer.

Qualcomm Adreno 619: Integrated (in the Snapdragon 750G) graphics card based on the Adreno 600 architecture. The performance is a lot better than the old Adreno 612.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

SD 695 5G: Fast mid-range ARM SoC with 8 CPU Kryo 660 cores (two fast 2.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A78 based cores in a cluster and six power saving ARM Cortex-A55 based cores at 1.7 GHz) and a lower mid range Adreno 619 GPU. Supports only Wi-Fi 5 and is manufactured in the 6 nm.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.71.5%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
