Google releases new Nest Learning Thermostat for $279.99 with fresh design, Soli radar chip and Matter support
Google has finally updated the Nest Learning Thermostat, which it has been selling in 3rd Gen form (curr. $168 on Amazon) for almost a decade. Arriving alongside the Google TV Streamer, the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen features an overhauled design that comes in black, silver or gold finishes. However, the new domed LCD screen practically hides these finishes altogether thanks to a 60% larger panel size.
Nonetheless, the new Nest Learning Thermostat still has a rotating frame for scrolling through menus or setting a desired temperature. Additionally, Google has integrated 'Dynamic Farsight', which relies upon its Soli radar system to show different content when someone approaches. As the thermostat's name suggests, it also 'learns' user habits to save energy and provide what it thinks is the most comfortable ambient temperature. Incidentally, the new thermostat not only supports Google Home but also Apple HomeKit and Samsung SmartThings courtesy of a Matter modem.
Currently, the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen appears to be exclusive to Canada and the US, with no word yet given on international availability or pricing. For reference, the thermostat sells for $279.99 in the US and CAD$379.99 in Canada but will not start shipping until August 20. Please note that while each thermostat comes with a Nest Temperature Sensor 2nd Gen, additional units are available for $39.99 or $99.99 as a 3-pack bundle.
