Google Pixel 8a revealed to offer seven years of updates and AI features by leaked promotional materials

The successor to the Pixel 7a (curr. $349 on Amazon) is almost upon us. Currently, the Pixel 8a is expected to be officially presented on May 14, the date of Google's I/O 2024 conference. Nonetheless, Android Headlines, @OnLeaks and MySmartPrice have obtained various marketing materials in advance, which they have leaked online.

Incidentally, it seems that Google intends to begin shipping the Pixel 8a on May 16, at least going off the date shown on Android Headlines' new set of render images. Somewhat predictably, Google will focus on the various AI aspects of its next smartphone, just as it did late last year with the release of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Thus, Google will position the Pixel 8a as offering an 'AI-mazing Pixel Camera', despite containing the same 64 MP primary (1/1.73-inch), 13 MP ultra-wide-angle and 13 MP front-facing cameras as its predecessor.

Moreover, the leaked promotional materials confirm that the Pixel 8a features a Tensor G3 chipset, 18 W wired charging from Google's 30 W USB Type-C charger, an IP67 certification against dust and water ingress. Furthermore, the mid-range handset will match its flagship counterparts with seven years of security updates. However, it remains to be seen how many Android OS updates the device will receive at this stage. Given that Google stresses that this update promise only applies to security updates, we suspect its OS update commitment will fall short by at least a few years.
