NVIDIA GeForce GTS 350M vs NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 350M

► remove from comparison NVIDIA GeForce GTS 350M

The Nvidia GeForce GTS 350M is a high performance laptop graphics card and based on the GT215 core. According to the released information by Nvidia the card is identical to the GeForce GTS 250M. However, in the Toshiba A663-3DV the clock rate is a bit lower (450/1080MHz).

The GT215 core supports DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 2.1. It features 96 shader cores as the 9800M GT, but the memory bus is only 128 bit wide. To compensate this, the GTS 350M supports GDDR5. Therefore, the performance is significantly lower when cheap DDR3 memory is used.

As the GeForce 9800M GT, the laptop graphics card GTS 350M features 96 stream processors that do the work of the former dedicated pixel- and vertex-shaders. The unified shaders of Nvidia are 1-dimensional (AMD has 5-dimensional shaders which leads to the higher number of shaders).

The GeForce GPU also supports CUDADirectX ComputeOpenCL, and PhysX to use the shaders for other tasks than rendering images (like encoding videos, calculating the physics of a game or mathematical tasks). For these special tasks, the GPU can be noticeably faster than current CPUs.

The mobile graphics card has a built in video decoder called PureVideo HD with VP4. The Video Processor 4 (VP4) supports the full decoding of H.264, VC-1, and now also MPEG-4 ASP (e.g. DivX or XviD). MPEG-1 still wont be supported, but the decoding of this codec is quite trivial on a CPU.

In conjunction with a chipset from Nvidia with integrated graphics (e.g. 9400M), the GTS 350M supports Hybrid-SLI (HybridPower but no GeForceBoost). HybridPower is a technique to choose between the integrated and dedicated graphics core, if performance or battery runtime is needed. This works only in Windows Vista (and possibly Windows 7). Up to now the user has to use a tool to switch between the GPUs. Later Nvidia wants to switch automatically in the drivers. GeForceBoost is not supported by the GTS 360M because the SLI combination would not perform better.

The performance of the middle class - high end GPU GeForce GTS 350M should be on par compared to the GTS 250M. Demanding DirectX 10 games like Crysis should run fluently in medium to high details. Older or less demanding games should run in high detail settings and high resolutions.

Depending on the the used type of graphics memory (GDDR5, GDDR3) the performance may differ. The maximum clock rate can also differ according to the used graphics RAM. The maximum support clock rate is 2000 MHz for GDDR5.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M

► remove from comparison NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M

The NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M is a DirectX 11 graphics card of the middle class. It is based on the Kepler architecture and manufactured by TSMC in a 28-nanometer process. The GK107 chip (384 shaders) is clocked at up to 980 MHz plus boost and has a 128 bit memory interface paired with GDDR5 graphics memory. Compared to the GeForce 750M, the 755M is combined only with GDDR5 graphics memory and clocked slightly higher.

Architecture

The GK107 Kepler core offers two shader blocks, called SMX, each with 192 shaders for a total of 384 shader cores that are clocked at the same speed as the processor core. Although more shader cores are available in the Kepler architecture as compared to the Fermi design, the Kepler shaders are expected to be up to two times more power efficient. However, due to the missing hot clock of the shader domain, two shaders of a Kepler chip are as fast as one shader of a Fermi chip, even though Fermi shaders are clocked at twice the speed.

PCIe 3.0 is now supported by the mobile Kepler series and GPU Boost 2.0 can automatically overclock the card if the laptop cooling system allows it. This feature is available on any notebook with a graphics card of the 700M series.

Performance

The GT 755M performs slightly above a GDDR5 equipped GeForce GT 750M as only the clock rates are slightly higher. Many current games (as of 2013) can be played fluently in high settings. In older titles, there are also reserves for additional quality features like AA and AF.

Features

The feature set includes support for up to 4 active displays. Furthermore, high resolution monitors of up to 3840x2160 pixels can now be connected using DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 1.4a if available. HD-Audio codecs, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, can be transmitted via bitstream mode through the HDMI port. However, as most laptops will feature Optimus, the integrated GPU will likely have direct control over the display ports and may limit the feature set available by the Nvidia Kepler cards.

The 5th generation PureVideo HD video processor (VP5) (also integrated in the GK107 core) offers hardware decoding of HD videos. Common codecs such as MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4 ASP, H.264 and VC1/WMV9 are fully supported up to 4K resolutions while VC1 and MPEG-4 are supported up to 1080p. Two streams can be decoded in parallel for features such as Picture-in-Picture. Another feature is the inclusion of a dedicated video encoding engine similar to Intel QuickSync that can be accessed via the NVENCI API.

Power Consumption

The power consumption of the GeForce GT 755M should be around 50 Watt (according to Techpowerup). As a result, the Nvidia GPU is best suited for notebooks 15 inches in size or greater.
