GTA VI reportedly introduces a five-tier criminal profile system that tracks Jason and Lucia separately, with the lowest honor state becoming permanent once reached. Rockstar says the mechanic expands player choice without restricting the series’ signature freedom, though its impact on the story remains unclear.

Rockstar is shaking up GTA VI’s core mechanics in several ways. A noteworthy change is the evolution of the wanted system and a first-time inclusion of an honor system in the franchise’s history, similar to the one found in the Red Dead Redemption series. A player’s illegal activities will face repercussions beyond just having the cops after them; a criminal profile will track their actions and determine their reputation.

A 'point of no return' for doing what the game does best?

Another thing to consider is that Rockstar has added a point of no return for a player’s criminal profile. The criminal profile system has 5 levels: Professional, Aggressive, Violent, Psycho, and the fifth state is still unnamed as of yet. Professional is the default and most optimal state, with the level dropping in sequential order per the aforementioned states. The last state is said to be difficult to reach, but if a player manages to reach it, they will sink to the depths of evil permanently.

While switching between the protagonists Jason and Lucia is allowed under specific conditions, each character will have their own separate profile. The intent is for players to act with their characters’ respective profiles in mind. Players can also choose to play while maintaining a specific profile state, or deactivate notifications about their profile status changing to see what their actions lead to, then replay the game afterward if they want to.

No "right or wrong way" to approach the game

Rockstar has yet to explain how these profile states will affect the main narrative and other related questlines, although it is safe to assume that being a villain will not pay off in the long run and potentially won’t end well for the protagonists, as seen in previous Rockstar titles. GTA VI co-head of development Rob Nelson, in an interview with YouTuber TGG, stated, “There’s no right or wrong way to play the game.”

He further added:

“Just a bit more choice now. How do you want to play this game if your actions may have some impact on things? You can still cause as much chaos as you want if that’s what you want to do. I don’t think it changes what GTA is. It changes what it can be for people who want to engage with it in that way. You still have as much freedom as you had before; you can just do more now, and you have more choice in terms of how you approach situations.”
