GPD is in the process of upgrading its product line to AMD's latest Strix Point APUs. This time, it is the turn of the Win Max 2, which has received the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, among other upgrades.

GPD has returned fresh from updating the Win 4 to AMD's Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 APU. Now, the company has turned to the Win Max 2, which originally arrived in 2022 with the Ryzen 7 6800U. However, GPD updated it to the Ryzen 5 7640U and Ryzen 7 7840U less than a year later before switching the device to the Ryzen 5 8640U and Ryzen 7 8840U (curr. $1,287.95 on Amazon) in the spring.

Now, GPD is offering the Win Max 2 2025 with a choice between the existing Ryzen 7 8840U and Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. On the face of it, the inclusion of the Ryzen 7 8840U may sound unusual, given that it is present on the Win Max 2. With that being said, it seems that the Win Max 2 2025 contains a few additional upgrades over just an APU swap.

For reference, that APU swap to a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 yields a 30% theoretical performance improvement over the Ryzen 7 8840U. Conversely, the APU's Radeon 890M iGPU only outperforms the Radeon 780M found in the Ryzen 7 8840U by about 15% in games. Nonetheless, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and Radeon 890M should perform more efficiently at lower TDPs than the Ryzen 7 8840U and Radeon 780M.

Moreover, the Win Max 2 2025 has a 12.5% brighter display than its predecessor at 450 nits vs. 400 nits. Please note that GPD continues to include a 60 Hz and 2,560 x 1,600-pixel panel, though. Furthermore, the new Win Max 2 features a second USB4 port that the 2024 edition lacked. Meanwhile, it seems that the USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports are new; unfortunately, it is unclear whether older models conformed to the Gen 1 or Gen 2 standards.

On top of that, it looks as though the Win Max 2 2025 ships with LPDDR5X RAM clocked at 7,500 MT/s by default, unlike earlier models. Currently, the new Win Max 2 is available to back on Indiegogo for ~$958 with a Ryzen 7 8840U, 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. Alternatively, the machine costs ~$1,462 with AMD's new Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, as well as 64 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage. At the time of publication, GPD hopes to begin shipping both variants later this month.
