GOG free game: 2D metroidvania Lost Ruins available as Winter Sale giveaway for limited time

Good Old Games is running its annual Winter Sale, during which it is offering discounts on exactly 6,000 games. Today, however, the games store that boasts a “gamers-first approach” to gaming is offering Lost Ruins for free.

The deal will only last 72 hours from the time it went live, meaning it will end on December 21, just in time for the Steam Winter Sale.

Lost Ruins follows the adventure of a schoolgirl after she is rescued and given magical powers by a witch who seems to have her own agenda. With violence as the only way out, players must fight their way through hordes of monsters to unravel the mysteries of the dungeon and hope to find a way out.

Reviews for Lost Ruins are quick to praise its anime-inspired pixel graphics and unique spin on the metroidvania genre that integrates survival mechanics — although to somewhat mixed effect. Lost Ruins isn't a particularly long game, coming in at around the six-hour mark, nor is it particularly difficult, although enemies do tend to hit hard and can easily wipe you out if you're not careful.

However, the game is certainly worth a look for those looking to dip their toes into the metroidvania genre or gamers looking for something else to wile away the holiday season on their Steam Decks.
