Fans should soon learn when Funcom's survival MMO will become available for PC gamers. Set in Frank Herbert's bleak Arrakis, Dune: Awakening blends the base building and scavenging of the developer's Conan Exiles with the MMO gameplay of Anarchy Online. Funcom has scheduled a Dune: Awakening release date reveal trailer on YouTube for February 20.
Dune: Awakening puts a spin on the plots of both Herbert's novels and Denis Villeneuve's recent movies. One of the obvious differences is that Jessica Atreides, or Lady Jessica, gives birth to a daughter rather than Paul Atreides. Players will encounter other characters who died in the books or films but remain alive in Funcom's upcoming Dune: Awakening. While the timeline may not be accurate, the visuals in the game are inspired by the Villeneuve movies.
Anxious gamers are currently debating whether Dune: Awakening will be more of an MMORPG or survival title. Spice raids will likely prove disastrous without the help of party members. However, much of the game involves single-player scavenging in the blazing-hot desert. That pleases fans of survival adventures like Conan Exiles or Rust. On the other hand, some players crave constant social interaction and maps full of potential new friends.
Since its August 2024 announcement, some followers have been frustrated by the lack of Dune: Awakening news. The absence of PR was especially surprising, considering the game is based on a popular franchise. Funcom finally posted a new video earlier in the month, showcasing the visuals of desolate Arrakis. The company also confirmed that the title was still on pace for an early 2025 debut.
Even if the game is slightly delayed, players can find out the exact Dune: Awakening release date tomorrow. The February 20th reveal trailer is set to go live just before 10 AM EST.
