Stars Reach is an upcoming sci-fi sandbox MMORPG featuring a dynamic, tactical combat system and diverse gameplay paths. Players can chart their own course, whether as a cartographer selling planetary maps, a miner extracting raw materials or a governor managing their own planet. In the long run, Stars Reach aims to redefine the genre – much like World of Warcraft did for fantasy MMORPGs. The video below offers a first look:
The developer studio Playable Worlds has big ambitions for Stars Reach – and they don’t seem unrealistic. Leading the project is Raph Koster, known for his work on genre classics like Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies. Development has been underway for five years, with $38 million in investor funding already secured. However, with the game still in its pre-alpha phase, that funding isn't enough. To finance the next stage, the studio has turned to Kickstarter.
Kickstarter campaign with special rewards
Playable Worlds has yet to reveal specific expectations or financial goals for the Kickstarter campaign. However, details about backer rewards are already available. Supporters can choose from multiple tiers, some offering special perks – though none will affect game balance. These include:
- Citizen: In-game title, exclusive Discord rank, 4K wallpapers
- Scout: Outfits, beginner gear for Early Access, unique pet emote, name mention in the credits
- Reacher: Four invitation passes for friends, starter sets with durable tools and special pets
- Titan: Invitation to the "Stars Reach" Launch Party, opportunity to design your own planet, immortality in the "Hall of Heroes" and a personal interview with Raph Koster
Each higher-tier reward includes the perks of the previous ones and early supporters can take advantage of limited-time discounts. Pricing details for the various tiers have not yet been revealed. Those interested can already follow Stars Reach on Kickstarter, with the campaign set to launch on February 10. Early access is planned for late 2025.
