After six years in Early Access, the full version of this building game launched on January 31 and has quickly won over players with its creative freedom and relaxing vibe.

The city-building game Foundation entered Early Access on February 1, 2019, as the debut title from Canadian studio Polymorph Games. Six years later, on January 31, 2025, the long-awaited 1.0 update launched, introducing a revamped military system, more complex housing and customizable rule sets alongside the game's full release.

An organic city building experience

Foundation stands out with its gridless building system, allowing medieval settlements to grow freely without predefined boundaries. Villagers construct homes in designated areas and clear marked forests on their own, leading to organically developing neighborhoods and economic zones. Meanwhile, players oversee production chains, engage in trade and build impressive landmarks like castles and monasteries. A modular construction system provides extensive customization options.

The game features procedurally generated maps, creating a unique world for each playthrough. Combined with the customizable rule sets introduced in Update 1.0, this adds significant replay value, allowing players to tailor their experience to their preferences.

25 percent discount on release

As of the time of research, Foundation had amassed 15,240 user reviews, with 86% being positive. Players particularly appreciate the game's organic settlement growth and relaxing atmosphere. While most reviews stem from its Early Access period, the game set a new player count record on February 2, reaching 18,422 concurrent players.

The building game normally costs $34.99 on Steam. However, a 25 percent release discount is being offered until February 14, reducing the price to $26.24. Foundation should definitely be worth a look for city-building fans. If you are unsure, you can take a look at the free demo version before you buy.
