Tokyo Xtreme Racer is an arcade-style racing sim that debuted in 1994 on Nintendo's Super Famicom (Super Nintendo in the West). Inspired by the street racing scene at Shuto Expressway in Tokyo, the game's unique SP (Spirit Point) Gauge system made it stand out.
The goal of a race is to deplete your rival's SP gauge while maintaining your own. You can do this by forcing your opponent to make mistakes or maintaining a lead. A race ends when one SP gauge is depleted. The game allows you to roam the streets freely and challenge other racers by flashing headlights.
The racers are either lone wolves or part of a rival crew. Winning races gives you currency to unlock visual customization of your vehicle, performance enhancements, and even new cars to try out. Your goal is to defeat rival bosses for progression till you face off against elite racers. If all of this sounds familiar, it's because the series' rival progression system has inspired a ton of franchises like Need for Speed and Burnout.
Genki plans to keep the game in Early Access for "approximately 4 months." The full release will depend on "how the progress of development goes throughout Early Access. Currently, the game has 50 cars and over 200 rivals to challenge, "each with their own unique storyline."
