No sooner has the Pokemon-inspired Palworld surprised with extremely high player numbers, than the next Steam hit seems to be on the horizon with Enshrouded: Over 70,000 Steam users are currently active in the survival co-op game Enshrouded from German developer Keen Games. And Linux gamers are not missing out either, although the Linux-based Steam Deck is currently struggling with performance issues in Enshrouded.
Enshrouded runs on Steam Deck and desktop Linux with Proton 8.0-5
"On both Steam Deck and Desktop Linux (Kubuntu 23.10) [Enshrouded] works out of the box with Proton 8.0-5, and all parts of the game I can tell so far work as expected," reports GamingOnLinux in a blog post about the survival game's Linux compatibility.
According to GamingOnLinux, the Steam Deck OLED works with both gamepad support and on-screen keyboard name entry in the character screen. The developer Keen Games seems to have tested the Steam Deck compatibility in advance.
However, the performance of the Early Access game on Steam Deck still seems extremely poor. Even on the lowest quality settings, most of the game runs at less than 30 frames per second, and that's without your own buildings or co-op players.
Up to 100 FPS on a desktop computer with Radeon 6800 XT and Kubuntu 23.10
When tested on a desktop with an AMD Radeon 6800 XT and a Ryzen 5800X running Kubuntu 23.10, the frame rate is significantly better, according to Liam Dawe of GamingOnLinux. Here, 80 - 100 fps are possible with the quality settings set to 'Balanced' at a resolution of 1440p.
"Something still feels off with it though. Even though that should be enough to make it feel smooth, it doesn't feel like it's actually anywhere near that when running around. It's performance is just odd, which I've seen repeated by players on Windows too," writes GamingOnLinux in its blog post about Enshrouded's performance.
