Chuwi UBook Pro Surface Pro clone has a brighter display than the actual Surface Pro
We're currently in the midst of reviewing the Chuwi UBook Pro - a 12.3-inch Windows tablet that borrows more than just a handful of design elements from the Microsoft Surface Pro series. Chuwi is notorious for offering laptops and tablets that look like high-end flagship machines but for just a fraction of the price because of sly cut corners made elsewhere.
The UBook Pro, which retails for hundreds less than the Surface Pro 6 or Surface Pro 7, is expected to be inferior in every way to the Microsoft tablet series that it is trying to emulate. We were thus surprised that it actually outclasses even the best Microsoft Surface Pro tablet in one key area: screen brightness. As shown by our table below, the UBook Pro display can reach up to 868 nits when on the maximum brightness setting compared to only 484 nits on the Surface Pro 6. This advantage comes at the cost of higher power consumption; we're able to measure an increase of 6 W between the minimum and maximum brightness setting on the Chuwi tablet.
Our independent data is made more puzzling by the fact that Chuwi advertises a screen brightness of only 360 nits on its Indiegogo page. We've reached out to Chuwi to find out why there is such an unusually wide discrepancy with our test unit and will update this page once we have more info.
