The trendy smartphone OEM Nothing has announced that the first brand from its affordable spin-off CMF can now upgrade to Android 15 - sort of. The Phone 1's inaugural Open Beta unlocks the latest Nothing OS 3.0 features such as Shared Widgets, the AI-powered Smart Drawer and re-sizeable app pop-up windows. However, switching to the build right now comes with some caveats.

At $289 on Amazon right now, the CMF Phone 1 is Nothing's cheapest smartphone of 2024 - although it is also pitched as a gateway device to a range of "detachable, functional" accessories made to appeal to modular design enthusiasts.

Despite its price, CMF had pledged to confer Android 15 access on the Phone 1 by now, and has now made good on this promise (technically) with the device's latest Open Beta.

The build should let Phone 1 users enjoy the latest Nothing OS 3.0 features such as its new charging and fingerprint-unlocking animations as well as the Shared Widgets that should sync with those of friends or relatives; partial screen recordings; "AI-powered" app drawer arrangements and new clock faces.

However, downloading the Nothing OS 3.0 Open Beta for CMF Phone 1 is not without its risks. The brand notes that once it is on the device, there is no going back to Android 14, and the brand has yet to fix that. In addition, as with all betas, use of the build might entail more bugs and less stability than normal.

The instructions on how to install the Open Beta are found on Nothing's community website.
